I am receiving the above error message when Avast trys to check my Gmail a/c.
In case this is a server timeout I have increased the timeout, but to no effect.
All other mail is checked ok including imap.
Any ideas ?
Robin.
Are you checking your Gmail using a standard email port, like 110 as this is for unencrypted traffic, gmail uses encrypted email (SSL/TLS) and this should use a different email port, can’t recall (I don’t use gMail). avast! nor other AVs can’t scan encrypted email directly and this is likely to be why the timeout occurs.
That is the whole point of secure email and to scan it you need to use a third party interface like STunnel to be able to scan it. Gmail is scanned for viruses so the risk is lessor than not being scanned at all.
Thunderbird - 587
Outlook/Express - 465

Thanks OC, from your own reference link the POP3 SSL/TLS Port should be 995, 465 is for SMTP since ‘romeohotel’ is getting the timeouts when checking gmail romeohotel would be using the POP3 port.
Strangely they don’t mention changing the pop3 port in thunderbird, which I would have thought was an omission.
Thunderbird is 995 too. Sorry about the wrong dope, but at least it was there. My mother always said that I was a little dyslexic.
No problem, at least the reference link did its job.
Now all we need is some feed back from romeohotel.
