1.04.2020 virus definition update and VNC problem

Hi all !

With today (1.04.2020) virus definition update I got two problems on my computers having Windows 7 32bit OS and Avast Pro Antivirus:

  • remote desktop connection from the Internet to TightVNC server installed on my PC is not working (need for remote work!)
  • printing from my PC to the printer (connected to local network printserver) is blocked as well

In both case the problem comes surely from latest virus definition update, because it is same on few same configuration computers, can be “bypassed” by simple Avast turn off,
and everything was working normally till yesterday.

Is this problem known ?

In case of TightVNC of corse there is (and was) added exception of TightVNC folder

Can anyone explain why Avast is blocking access to TightVNC when tvnserver.exe file is added to exception list ?

Avast has started to block it since 1.04.2020 update

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium)
  • Which version/build of Avast…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium): Avast Premium Security 20.2.2401 (compilation 20.2.5130.561)
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?) Windows 7 Professional SP1 64bit
  • Other security related software installed…? NO
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…? None. Everything was working fine till 1.04.2020 virus definition update. It is the only reason of connection blocking

Same issue exists on:

  • Windows XP Home 32bit v.SP3
  • Windows 7 32bit SP1
  • Windows 7 64bit SP1

So…at 1.04.2020 I got same issue on about 10 different computers in my office (running different Windows, same Avast (maybe only different compilations), same tvnserver.exe).
Till 31.03 everything was working normally, now I have to deactivate avast firewall on the office PC every time I want to use remote desktop connection to it.

I’m sure it’s not the problem of configuration or OS - because same issue at the same time happened on a 10 different PC’s

Set the Avast Firewall to private mode and reboot.

OK, working and thank you !

You’re welcome.
