I’ve just installed avast!, replacing AVG after their announcement to discontinue the free version. I’m much more impressed with avast! anyway, specially since it detected several worms that AVG allowed in! But I have a problem that I don’t see this mentioned in any other threads…
Running the avast! main interface is causing 100% cpu utilisation! The mouse becomes extremely jerky etc. Task Manager shows ashSimpl.exe doing all the damage.
I tried adjusting the Resident Protection from default Standard to Low, and things got better. I then tried protection on High, and things were still OK(ish). Back on Standard and CPU is still OK(except see below)! Go figure!
But! When the mouse is anywhere within the avasti! UI, the mouse becomes jerky again, and CPU utilisation shoots up to 100%. In more detail, the non-active parts of the UI are OK (title bar and skin design area), but anywhere containing active elements generates the problem.
I have tried different skins but no difference. Translucent effects on or off makes no difference.

WinXP Pro SP2, all available patches.

Recently or a long time ago. AVG 7.0 is free in the beta version. ???
Are you running a scheduled scanning (in trial Pro version)?
Do you have many archive (*.zip, *.arj, *.cab) files and big ones (large size)? Did you check to scan archives?
So the problem happens only if you have the avast Simple User Interface (the on-demand scanner) started? (because that’s ashSimpl.exe)
What if you switch to another skin - does it change anything?
What if you turn off skins in the Simple UI (see 1st page of program Settings) - does it make any difference?
I use the “Internet Download Accelerator”, and when I started this program and he prompts if I want to resume a download, if I click yes, the ashServ.exe freeze my PC and I had to reboot with the reset.
I choose no, to prevent this, and delete the file, and everything is fine now. The file that I was downloading was clean!
No, it only happen that time.
I delete the file from the download manager list, and put again to download and after I don’t have problem.
But is strange whay the avast! freeze that way…
