I am getting a message that avast! was not updated and to report errors
SI 0x 0000 0005
ST 0X 0000 0005
LE 0x 0000 0000
What should I do. Should I uninstall and reinstall? Is everything OK?

Is this from vpsupd.exe?
Why don’t you use the built-in updater instead?
thanks for your quick response. I usually let avast! schedule my updates for me. I believe that will put less stress on your servers. However for several days now, I have been getting messages that avast was not able to be updated. this is why I manually went to the download updates page.
YES, it was from Is this from vpsupd.exe
Do you have any suggestions?
OK, thanks for the explanation.
Please post the tail of the file \setup\setup.log.
It’s strange that avast refused to update, we haven’t had any server-down reports lately…
BTW 5 means access denied. :-\
I still get the message “An error has occured while attempting to update!” It then gives me a time which I assume is length of attemt to connect to server and what I assume is a server name and address.
You asked me to post the tail of \setup\setup.log
how do I do that?
I did a windows explorer
search for a file named that and got no results
With a default installation of avast the file will be in:
c:\program files\alwil software\avast4\data\log
Open it in a textediter and copy paste the tail here.
Open the file setup.log (e.g. in Notepad) that’s in the setup subfolder of avast.
Scroll to the end and post the last part (separated by a blank line)
The version in the setup folder folder is more verbose than the one in the log folder. Please post an excerpt from the one from the setup folder.
Not sure how much is the tail, but I am attatching the contents of setup log
Hmm, it seems it really can’t access the web servers.
Can you e.g. access the following file in your browser: http://download8.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def ?
How do you connect to the Internet?
Thanks
Vlk
Yes, I see it.
I am currently connected via wireless to a mid speed server. Right now I am at the liabray, but I recieved the same could not connect message at work. There IS a proxy in both place. I am using Win XP home SP2, IE6. I have zone alarm as my firewall and am willing to turn it off. I DID turn it off at work for a few attempts, but today it was on.
You may try to set up the proxy settings manually (instead of using “Autodetect” - which is the default).
avast → Settings → Updates (Basic) → Details → Proxy.
Thanks
Vlk
in settinngs the only choice is chest and smtp
That’s rather strange… could you post a screenshot?
