2 RESIDENT ANTISPYWARE PROTECTIONS ON???

Have a look on my recent personal experience on the subject. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=32936.msg275367#msg275367
I think it conflicts! 8)

Two resident anti-spyware applications isn’t recommended in the same way having two resident AVs isn’t recommend.

One resident and any number of on-demand AntiSpyware applications should be fine.

Based on your other topic post I would have gone with SpySweeper removed ST and installed SuperAntiSpyware free as an on-demand scanner backup.

David,
I agee. But my resource starved XP computers run much better with the lighter Spyware Terminator, SpySweeper is heavy on resources. My Dell can only handle 512mb of RAM & 64mb is reserved for video leaving me with 448mb usable. I quite often see a pop-up: Windows is increasing my paging file. Also, the chip set is so bad it creates terrible bottlenecks at times. A general statement cannot be made, one must consider the abilities of the computer. Maybe gdiloren’s machine can easily handle SpySweeper.

However, this subject is off-topic to this thread. The subject of this thread is whether or not gdiloren experienced a conflict between two real-time anti-spywares. It seems he did, I haven’t heard of SpySweeper blocking a download of WinPatrol or detecting WinPatrol as any infection. St allowed WP to be downloaded.

Thanks guys!!! Just as a precision, I am running with 3 antispyware resident protection:Windows Defender, Spyware Terminator, and SpySweeper. The latter, with all the 12 protections ON, seems to give me much problems. It was only after exiting the program the download of the winpatrol setup file for v.14 be completed successfully. Of course, I’m asking myself why such a behavior ONLY with that specific file. For example, I successfully downloaded the shockwave upgrade file with Spyware R-P ON without any problem. May be a False Positive??? :o Should I put ST and Windows Defender R-P OFF and keep only the SpySweeper R-P ON? ???

OK. Just realized I had also Spybot S&D Resident Protection ON. I just put them all OFF except for SpySweeper, all but him scanners on-demand. Then I also have SpywareBlaster, some kind of Resident-Protection here, also. Should I uninstall it??? ;D

On-demand scans with SAS free & AVG AS free show ST does an excellent job, I’m spyware/malware free.

I have scheduled scans in ST set to never & use SAS Free for on-demand scanning. I only use ST for real-time.

I have SpywareBlaster, it just blocks spyware & bad sites, but it blocks in real-time. It only works for IE & Firefox, so it doesn’t do me much good as I use Opera. It doesn’t use any resources that I know of. I rely on OpenDNS for bad site blocking.

WinPatrol blocks a lot of bad stuff & alerts to new start ups, they could be unwanted.

avast! has spyware detections.

avast! + Opera + ST + PC Tools Firewall + WinPatrol keeps me spyware/malware/virus free.

So far I don’t need anything else.

It’s now for sure. The resident protections of SpySweeper and also Pc Tool’s Spyware Doctor ARE INTERFERING WITH THE IMMUNIZZATION OR UPDATE OF IMPORTANT SOFTWARE PROGRAMS. SpywareBlaster is one of them. Another one is Spybot S&D. Then the download of the winpatrol v.14 setup file blocked before it could complete. I’m switching to Spyware Terminator Resident-Protection. Thanks!! It’s light and does not interfere too much on my PC. :stuck_out_tongue:

SpywareBlaster is a passive means of protection, it edits IE and Firefox to block known bad sites, etc. So it doesn’t run in the background or take up any system resources.

From your post it just goes to show you can get too much of a good thing. Keep to one resident AV or AS and as many on-demand back-up scanners as you wish.

DavidR, Thanks! I think you meant keep 1 R-P antivirus AND antispyware too, one of each. Thanks. Spent 3 days on solving this problem, gosh! :o

Yes, that is it one Resident application in each category, 1 anti-virus and 1 anti-spyware.

I had a look to the SpySweeper web forum only to realize it was not such a great software and its not freehttp://www.castlecops.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=search&mode=resultsand type “resident shield” and select the SpySweeper forum. They have an history of problems with AVAST and Spyware Blaster (although I was OK now with AVAST).

I use Windows defender and COMODO BOClean on real time, with AVAST and CFW.
I’ve got on demand SAS free and AVG AS free.
I immunize with spyware blaster and Spybot S&D.

I have got no problems.

Switching off the SpySweeper Real-Time protection solved all my problems!!! 8)

I don’t know…! I’m confused. Spybot S&D has now Security Center integration, SpywareTerminator hasn’t and it gets on my nerves being told I’m have my antispywares softwares deactivated. Then of course I use Real Time BoClean protection (which is not enough…!). So I installed the updated version of Spybot S&D with Real Time protection and haven’t got the guts to deactivate SpywareTerminator. I’m up to 3 Real Time antispyware software protection. I choose to deactivate Windows Defender though because I think it is not efficient enough. ???

I recommend you turn off real-time in Spybot S&D, uninstall BoClean entirely & use ST for real-time protection with SAS Free for on-demand scanning.

I’ve read Windows Defender runs as a service so it won’t conflict with ST. WD does deal with some real nasties even though it’s detection rate isn’t as good as ST’s, so WD may be a good choice to keep along side with ST.

SAS Free is good to have to check the thoroughness of ST & WD and as a second opinion if ST &/or WD do find an infection.

I always recommend setting ST’s scheduled scans to “never” as they can be annoying, if your computer is off at the time of the scheduled scan, the scheduled scan will pop-up annoyingly after boot up. Besides I prefer an on-demand scan by SAS Free.

Why uninstalll COMODO BOClean. I uninstall ST because gimme a lot of problems, and in the future versions… well, you can see, hehehe.

I’m not going there. ::slight_smile:

ST doesn’t give me any problems & it does an excellent job. Any & all scans I do with other security software come up clean showing ST works. The credit is also due to the rest of my security setup in my sig.

Well, I won’t risk into their Beta version. I do agree with you with SAS on demand scans and Windows Defender. But you have to admit that the line is not cleanely “cut” as for the antivirus software protection (you need basically only one, I think like BitDefender 10 on demand is too much on ressources for nothing!) ::slight_smile:

I didn’t suggest any beta versions or BitDefender 10 on demand. ???

I do run ESET’s online antivirus (NOD32) scan occasionally. It always confirms avast! is doing an excellent job. I also use AVG ARK (anti-rootkit) & Prevx CSI. I’m clean.
