Don’t get me wrong…I been using Avast since 4.8 edition. And they are striving to get better. But the 2 things I totally hate about Avast is:
Updates: Has “manual” but if U put it on manual the Icon in task bar freezes, doesn’t turn… So U feel like maybe it’s not working properly or maybe it didn’t load right…But!!!
If U put it to “automatic” when your computer is starting It doesn’t update right away…I waited 2 hours for it to update and finally I figured I’d do my work, is probably updated…So I get on Youtube trying to download the video I want to learn to play on my guitar…Guess what??? AVAST IS UPDATING…LOL And my video stops downloading.
SHIELDS: Simple …Why when I go to “settings” and turn the certain shield off… eg. “File Shield” off …cause I’m playing a game that needs more memory…The shield is still on and still working?
Just my Opinion…Although I do like the Avast Staff and Forum Administrators… I just feel these things should be looked into. And I know you can’t please everybdy…
finally I figured I'd do my work, is probably updated....So I get on Youtube trying to download the video I want to learn to play on my guitar...Guess what???????? AVAST IS UPDATING...LOL And my video stops downloading.
Just like you I have been there and done it, not with avast!, and damned if it’s not one of the most frustrating computer experiences one can have.
@ Daris
If you set it to Manual, then you also want to uncheck the Monitor, ‘Definitions auto updates’ option in the avastUI, Settings, Status Bar, Components Monitored, see image. Avast is still one of the most configurable AVs out there.
I have updates on manual and my icon doesn’t freeze. On automatic it should update the very first thing when you start up. If you’re on dialup it may take awhile (7-8 minutes), especially if you haven’t updated for a couple of days. One improvement to Avast’s automatic updates I think could be made is an optional progress meter. As it is now, you just have wait and watch for the slider, or for the definition version to change in the interface to know it’s done.
If you turn a shield off it shouldn’t stay on or work, mine don’t anyway.
It sounds like you’re Avast install might be corrupted or something. I’d look into that or check your settings. Avast shouldn’t be doing the things you’re describing.
The icon doesn’t freeze as such, but is changed to a static icon with the exclamation point on a yellow triangle superimposed over the avast a and orange ball.
However, as said unchecking the ‘Definitions auto updates’ option in the avastUI, Settings, Status Bar, Components Monitored, restores the normal icon, which will rotate.
It Took Me 20 days to find components monitored!!!Don’t you think that a company that has so much to offer…Meaning so many shields and so much new stuff that they would make MANUAL UPDATES a priority…Again I was Online trying to do Online banking and guess what…??? Avast starts updating…But Guess what?? I waited 2 effen hours before I did my Online banking and when I decided to purchase stuff…woooh…Avast is updating!!! And Now I get a double Avast Update that pops up and I can’t even Get rid of that…I am so disappointed in Avast… that yes I am going to AVG… They can do so much and add so many new shields and scans and sandbox etc. yet those dummies can’t make MANUAL updates …so when people are ready to update they can do so at their own time…Maybe these guys need someone from AVG or AVIRA or Symantec to help them find how to make MANUAL Updates…It doesn’t matter though…cause I threw my computer against my wall last time so now I will get a new one from my company… and at home will Use Linux Ubintu or my Mac… I wish they had the Avast 4.8 again…
I don’t know why it took you 20 days to find it as I posted where to find it accompanied by an image to further help in Reply #3 on the 16th of May a little over three hours after your post.
