20% more spam for May

Hi undoer’s-of-evil,

During the month of May the amount of spam increased with some 20%,
these figures come from CipherTrust, a spam filtering company.
The increase is caused because the Blue Frog anti-spam service was terminated, and through the use of pictures inside spam messages. These messages only consits of pictures and vary in size, which makes them unstoppable by text based filters Through the pictures spammers can easily change lettertype, background color and other indicators.

“It is hard to trace them as being spam, unless you use optical scanning
software to identify characters within the pictures as text”, says Dmitri Alperovitch. The problem with this technology is that it works rather slow, making it unfit to filter against spam.

Furthermore CipherTrust for May found 7,4 million new zombies, of which 24% are within China, 9,4% in the US, and 7,5% in Germany. Zombies are by far the choice way of spammers to spread spam. There are only 5000 servers that are sending out spam, and most spam is pread through infected PC’s.

64% of the machines that spread spam through China are situated in Taiwan. The United States of America is second with a good 23%, followed by China with 3%.

Also in a report today on the Register website, Aladdin confirm a large percentage increase increase in Trojans and spyware programs http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/06/12/malware_trends_aladdin/

If the figures quoted in this article are a correct reflection of the real world, then many traditional antivirus vendors are going to have to significantly up their game or risk seeing many dissatisfied customers. :-\
