2014.9.0.2008-Tools\Firewall\Settings\System Rules

Can anyone please tell me where (or if) there is a detailed explanation of the System Rules in these settings, and what their effects are?

They are all “Allow” items like DNS, Windows File and Printer Sharing and so forth, with three possible settings “Enabled”, “Disabled” and “Not Configured”.

Giving this topic another ride to the top …
I’m also trying to find explanations for the system rules so I could configure avast firewall according to my needs … is there any help file or some kind of knowledge base on the avast webpage addressing this settings?
Thanks

Two months, no answers, eh?
You have to permit UDP to remote port 53 of your DNS server(s), otherwise internet won’t work.
You have to permit outbound by TCP remote port 80 for the websites to work, 443 if https.
If you have a network printer and/or do filesharing with another computer on your LAN, allow all that, deny to the internet.
I don’t have Avast’s firewall, no idea how it’s structured, so can’t help. Isn’t there a built in help in the GUI? Perhaps a “?” someplace? or in the user manual?

You can’t do worse than read this old and very usefull guide, applicable to all XP firewalls

Thanks for your help cooby … avast system rules in the Internet Security edition are somewhat basic (see attached picture) but there is no downloadable user manual for the latest edition of avast as far as I was able to find one in the document section of avast support site.
Cheers

I see. It looks like it’s based on Windows7 or 8 or Vista built in firewall.
If you’re at home you can disable IGMP, multicast, VPN if not using it, you might need to enable file and printer sharing - but is there a button someplace to see with whom?
And I may well be wrong in multicast if you use IPv6. So I’ll stop here and you have to figure it somehow.

Built in firewall has both inbound and outbound controls and I don’t see it in your screen shots. Also application rules are needed.
There was a looooooooong tutorial on the meaning of all this here:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=239750
,if you have nothing better to read. It’s a great writeup, but quite difficult IMO. Ignore how to use the built-in one, just try to grasp some ideas what can/should be done.

Isn’t there anything here that’s good for you? Hard to believe.

cooby, I appreciate your help. Existing user manual in the support section is for AIS ver.8 and that one is different than the latest edition. Posted link from wilders security is helpful too. I will do some configuring based on all these informations. Thanks again
