I was indeed right!
Remember the v4.7 beta bug where i reported non functional Program Settings… menu function in avast! tray icon menu? Well i was right and this is certanly beyond random display glitch.
Happened first when i was beta testing v4.7. Happened today (the final official v4.7 build on my cousins PC which was brand new PC with clean WinXP SP2) and it happened again on my PC just now.
3 times with exactly the same process is far from coincidence.
Step by step reproduction of bug?
Install avast!, do the necessary reboot and then head straight to tray icon (right click it) and then try to left click Program Settings… “menu”.
Nothing will happen (at all). Like you never clicked that.
Then you have to access Program Settings… via Simple interface and after you do that it will start working as usual.
Next thing is the Warning category of my log, related with Web Shield producing error lines for nearly all web forums that i visit. Here are just few…

This error code means some exception in polymorphic viruses code. As far as I know this just means, that polymorph code could not run correctly ,most probably as a result, that you are (or to be more precise WebShield is) scanning the file which is not fully downloaded - only a part of it is available at the time of scanning.
This does not represent any buggy situation (according to my understanding of this part of the avast! guts).
Perhaps a confirmation from Igor or Vlk might bring some extra light into this brief.
But logs are full of this stuff and is getting igger and bigger with every visited site. Appears to be problem with PHP or something since only such sites generate these errors.
I noticed the non-functional Program Settings menu item also when I installed 4.7 Pro a few days ago for a test drive. Clicking on that menu item from the tray does nothing. Had to get to settings via the main program. So you are not alone on that one…
This is relatively the same problem that I had with 4.6xxx, except I couldn’t access setting from anywhere.
With 4.7.817, couldn’t access from tray. Didn’t try again until I read RejZoR’s post. I had been in the main program earlier and viewed setting from there. Tried via the tray after reading above post. It now works as RejZoR states.
No password and don’t have the error’s he mentions.
4.6xx is gone now. It’s the version I had problems with. Even an update to 4.7.817 didn’t resolve it. 4.7.817 is fine now, once I viewed the settings via the main program.
If you would have asked before I uninstalled/reinstalled, I would have gladly tried. ;D
Hmm, whatever I do, I don’t seem able to simulate the problem (with the Settings dialog). It always shows OK here (I even tested on multiple OS’s, including Vista).
What if you first double-click the avast tray icon and open of the provider’s config page, then close it and try to open the Settings dialog? Will it open then?
Agreed. I wouldn’t have bothered to check to see if I could access the settings from the “a” right click menu after I’d accessed them from the main program, if I hadn’t read your post.
Not much point in me trying, as once you access the setting from the main program, everthing seems to work as it should. Maybe someone with a fresh install and the same problem could try…
For me accessing the settings menu from the scanner interface enabled the Program Settings option after rightclicking in the notification area which hadn’t been working before.
While you probably don’t need anymore “me toos” … I won’t let that stop me.
A brand new Dell crossed my threshold today … so I have been busy removing all the stuff they load it up with.
Then I installed avast 4.7 for the first time on the new machine. Everything worked fine in avast except that right clicking on the avast icon and selecting “Settings” (you guessed it) … did nothing - over and over again. Rebooted … still the same problem. Then I opened the “Start Avast Antivirus” window … and after that I could open the “Settings” just fine.
