4.6 shutdown problems with Win98 FE

With Avast version 4.5 I had no problem shutting down Win 98 First Edition. However, version 4.6 now hangs at shutdown. I then uninstall/reinstall avast, but no help. So I reverted to 4.5, and it shutsdown fine again.

However, on my other computer which has Win 98SE, 4.6 shutsdown perfectly fine. So, I think it must be a Win 98 First edition v.s. second edition problem… whereby SE works fine, but not FE.

Both my 98 systems have all the MS updates installed, however, unfortunately, the MS shutdown patch can only be installed on 98SE–so that may be the reason why 98FE won’t shutdown properly with 4.6.

So, can anything be done? It would be nice to get the shutdown problem fixed in 98FE… (although I can switch off fast-shutdown in msconfig…but then I have to shutdown windows by manually flipping the offswitch on my PC…)

Yup, I realize that 98 is an antique… but I hate XP… it’s so bloated! (IMHO!)

MS has a shutdown patch for 98. It may solve the problem.

EDIT:
Ah, never mind. I missed a part of your post.

No problem Eddy… Yeah, if you try to install the shutdown patch on 98 FE, the installer quits with a message stating that second edition is required. it’s a fine example of Bill Gates having fun with my brain. >:(

Hi StarFighter, you may try the following: add the following line to the [AAVM] section of the file \data\avast4.ini:

GracefulRpcShutdown=1

See if it makes any difference.
Thanks Vlk

You must have gone to genius school, because you solved the problem! ;D
