4.7 home wont update now

After 4.7 home updated automatically today to 0621-2 (May 23, 2006) the next time it went to check for updates, it nwo gives me an error message, and tells me in cannot find a server to connect to. The message recieved is:

Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Can’t select any server for downloading (from 0).

I havent changed any settings in the program itself (have DSL and no proxys are selected…“direct connect” is) and I still have it enabled for internet access through Outpost Firewall.

i am running XP Pro, fully updated on an AMD AthlonXP 2800 system with 1Gb of ram. The only provider not running is the webshield, and as I said, I havent changed any setting on the program in ages.

Any idea would be greatfully appreciated.

Try a repair, it sounds like your server.defs file is corrupted. Go to control panel, add/remove programmes - select Avast then on the left will be a scroll down - select repair (must be online) and bob’s your uncle. If that doesn’t work come back

Some how it would appear that the servers.def file is corrupted. If the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\Servers.def is 0KB and avast repair didn’t work - try deleting the servers.def file and do a manual iAVS update it should download a new servers.def file.

If not you can try and download the servers.def file, instructions and location in this post http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=504.msg169873#msg169873.

That did it!!! I forgot to mention, I couldnt manually update either. I decided to try d/l and copy the a new servers.def file before I attempted a “repair”… and it did the trick.

There were 3 files in the setup folder, that started “servers.***” i deleted all 3 of them (servers.def servers.def.lkg servers.def.vpu). I then d/l and copied the new file to that directory, and that cured the problem… THANK YOU!!!

You should only have deleted the servers.def the servers.def.lkg (last known good) shouldn’t be a problem I hope as it should get replaced, but I have no Idea what effect the servers.def.vpu being deleted might have. Deletion is never a best first option unless specifically instructed, if in doubt first ask or rename the file serversOLD.def.vpu, etc. that way you can recover from that situation.

I would suggest you do an avast repair and hopefully that will restore things to as they should be.
