I’m running version 4.8.1169 Pro on an XP SP3 Home ed. machine that is 1 year old. This machine came with
this program installed (custom-built). Since it’s a year old, I needed to purchase a new key. However, when this
new key is entered, I get “invalid key”. I’ve searched around this forum for a couple hours, and tried various
suggestions, but no luck.
Any other ideas?
On another note, when I try to change settings, I get “access is denied - cannot show settings”. Any clues?
BTW, this is a home computer. (Don’t know why they installed the pro version)
Hi, doof, welcome to the forum.
The issue is almost certainly caused by your out of date program version.
Current program version at 4.8.1335.
It is perhaps possible to update via the programs’ own updater. Right click the Avast icon, select “updating”, select “program update”.
If no go, or you prefer a clean new install, head on over to the Avast download page, and download the new version (home or pro) of your choice.
It may be advantageous to do a complete uninstall/re-install. If you elect to do that, or find it necessary, it would be a good idea to grab the Avast uninstall utility beforehand.
Hope that helps.
I’ve run both the program and virus definitions quite frequently, so that shouldn’t be the problem.

I suppose it would be easiest to uninstall and get the standard (free) version; it just bugs me
that I spent money on a new key for the pro version, and it won’t work.
I also imagine that my “access denied” might go away with the newer version.
If you’ve paid for the pro version, go download a fresh copy of that. Looks like a full uninstall/new install is indicated.
The key should work fine.
Let us know how you get on.
