[5.0.396 IS with sig 100204-0] Error 42110 File is a decompression bomb

Hallo,

I’m experiencing this error during a file scan. File structure is a zip that contains inside other archive types like “tar.gz” or “gz” or other zips. This error is raised on files with names like “image.bz” or “xfs.img.bz2”; they should be linux kernel images files or something similar or files to be managed with e2fs linux filesystem command.

Btw, feel free to give me an ftp account and a procedure to upload the zip (807mb) downloaded from the Asus support website. Or just tell me if you want one of the internal files that generates this error so you can investigate.

Thanks a lot

Simon

The name really is the most dangerous thing about this and I wish they would change it or simply not report it, a real PITA.

Boy I thought this P.I.T.A. relic of a message would have been consigned to the dustbin in version 5.0, apparently not, the biggest issue is the alert an not the file.

Personally I would consider excluding these files from scans, there should be no need to upload them as the message isn’t stating that they are malicious/infected, etc. just that they weren’t scanned because of the size when unpacked would be massive.

Infact this message is an alert that happens after the full scan, telling that some files can’t be examined by the engine. Btw, I agree they should modify the message. A “decompression bomb” for end users could sound like some kind of emergency.

Thanks for your help.

It isn’t what I class as an alert (what you associate with detection of a virus/trojan, etc.) but a notification/list of files which can’t/haven’t been scanned.

avast unlike many AVs does tell you about the files that can’t be scanned.
