I restored by XP software to an earlier date and 5.0 Pro will not function. All other software works properly. What to do?

What errors are you getting ?

The system restore can have some unexpected consequences and this may be one of them.

Have you tried a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Thanks for the reply.

My screen says “unsecured” with a “fix it” key and a “service stopped” with a “start program” prompt. Neither option works i.e. nothing happens when prompts are keyed.

I did try the repair option on the add/remove programs and again nothing happened.

I did try to undo the restore, but it wouldn’t restore to the current date.

As I said system restore can have unexpected consequences and this may be further complicated by trying to reverse any change. I gave up on system restore many, many years ago as it simply isn’t 100%, but you can’t just abandon it you have to have something to replace it, in my case hard drive imaging software.

I would say that you are probably looking at a clean reinstall to resolve this:
Download the latest version of avast Pro 5.0.462 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your previous download). Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here ensure you get the version5 one (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0), aswClear5.exe and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Make sure you save your licence file somewhere in order to insert it at the new install!
It is the .avastlic file.
