After the unsuccessful upgrade to 7.0.1473 from 7.0.1466, I went back down to 7.0.1466 and decided to wait for a version that would work with my system. I noticed 7.0.1474 was released but as there were still a few issues with this version, I thought better than to upgrade to it. Now that I keep getting the notification to upgrade to 7.0.1474, I thought I give it a go and see if it’ll work.
Unfortuntately it still hangs my system. It’s slightly better than 7.0.1473 as I now get the desktop icons whereas before I didn’t. However, Avast does not appear in the taskbar and if I click on the Avast desktop icon, it just hangs. It never opens the application. Further, I can’t even access the internet through IE. The same problem occurs when I click on it, it just hangs. Shutting down also causes the same problem as again nothing happens and the system hangs and I have to press the off switch. I’ve now reverted back to 7.0.1466.
Does anyone know if the Avast team are aware or are working on another fix so that it’ll work for Windows XP Pro 32bit?
Yes, I restarted my PC as instructed after the download. When the icons appeared on the desktop I was relieved but unfortunately it was short lived
I never had AVG on this particular PC but yes, I am still running ZoneAlarm. I’ve not had the chance to look at alternatives and as ZoneAlarm has worked with all previous Avast updates, I hoped that it would continue to do so - especially as its a popular and widely used firewall with good writeups.
Staffy I run Avast! 1477 with XP without any problems. It seems that your problem is computer specific to your sys; programs, hardware, etc.
I would do two things:
One. Make sure you do not have any traces of another AV. Old AV folder, etc. If you do, run specific tool for that AV. You can find those tools here: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
Download and save to your desktop and run aswclear.exe in Safe Mode for any old Avast! version you had before and last for V. 7.
Download and save a fresh copy of Avast!. Be sure to have your lincense handy if running a paid version.
Two. Since Zone Alarm and Avast! have some history together from way back, you only have to search Avast! forum to read how many members complained about it, I would uninstall ZA and try Avast! again and see what happens.
I have Windows XP SP3 32-bit, and Avast 7.0.1474 is working fine. I uninstalled previous version, and ran the Avast Uninstall Utility too… and then installed the latest version.
As the member above me wrote, it sounds like a problem with your system. Maybe the Zone Alarm firewall is causing trouble. I have read one other person report about having problems with Avast install on another site, and he was using ZA too. He removed ZA, and then installed 7.0.1466. All running good. I have reported to him that latest version too is working good, so most probably, he will go for it.
Any other security software you have installed, which might be interfering with Avast?
Thanks for your replies and links. When I have time to do so, I’m going to drop ZoneAlarm and see if that resolves the issue. I’m a bit hesitant as I’ve said previously, Avast and ZoneAlarm has always worked fine together for me and is working well with 7.0.1466. I’ve also been using ZoneAlarm for so long that to use another product will seem daunting! I’ve had a quick look at alternative firewalls and Commodo seemed good until I read that someone saying that the new version doesn’t set “individual application permission settings adequately” meaning that it “not to ask or set individual permissions for installed applications on the system” and has decided to use something else. I’m wondering how many other people have encounter similar problems like me and are also using ZoneAlarm and Avast :-\
