80000000.@ et al.

This seems to be a running gag in the forums, having a Win32:malware-gen error pop up every five minutes. And so it is with me. Just started yesterday, well, this morning more accurately … was about to let a boot scan run after MalwareBytes did its thing, but the issue with having a bright blue light in your computer in the bedroom… I can’t sleep and let it scan at the same time. Still, as it recurred when I came on and Spybot didn’t find anything, I’m following my nose here.

The errors are:
Win32:Downloader-PKU [Trj] regarding 80000032.@
Win32:Malware-gen 80000000.@ and 80000064.@
All based around services.exe

Logs attached … as best as I could do. My computer seems to be still actively running… I did zone in on one thing though:

22:32:54.711 File: C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_32\Desktop.ini INFECTED Win32:Sirefef-PL [Rtk]
22:32:56.442 File: C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini INFECTED Win32:Sirefef-PL [Rtk]

That’s screaming at me as the problem. I’m still too much of a novice to know what to do about it, though… but I’m optimistic someone will. (I’m off to sleep soon, probably, will check before and after work on posts.)

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
[*]Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Capsule analysis: So far, so good.

There was an issue wherein I followed the instructions for disabling avast! as per the link, and ComboFix gave an issue as claiming avast! was running antivirus and antispyware. I confirmed that the shields were in fact disabled until reboot and clicked okay, and it gave an alert that they were active. I took it upon myself to press ok and ‘run Combofix at (my) own risk’ at that point.

Also, two minor things – Yahoo Messenger barreled its way active after ComboFix’s forced restart, while ComboFix was telling me to ‘not run any programs until the log is complete’, though I shut it down as soon as I realized it was on; and avast’s UI didn’t come up by itself even after a reboot after ComboFix finished the log file, though its service was indeed running according to the Task Manager. And I brought up the UI from its desktop icon without any incident.

Seems to be running smoothly, though. I’ll keep running for a while normally and make an update if anything isn’t working properly anytime soon.

check back later today as essexboy will remove his tools when all is OK

Looks good how is the computer behaving ?

Behaving fairly normally. (Though I may be too used to long boot times; the past two times I’ve booted – last night and just now – were a bit quicker than usual, however.)

The one thing that bothers me is that again, AvastUI didn’t load in. (I have the widget on my desktop, and it displayed not an X or a check but a ‘blank screen’.) AvastSVC did, however. Also, when I manual-loaded AvastUI via the desktop shortcut, it had an alert for not updating the definitions; I was able to update through the status screen, though. (The current version would be 120721-0, IIRC…)

But other than that, no problem whatsoever. Browsed for two hours, Played Mass Effect 3 for another two, not another alert.

Avast may need a repair - do you know how to do that ?

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

:Commands [resethosts] [emptytemp] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Misc%20screen%20shots/CF_Uninstall-1.jpg

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Go to control panel
[*]Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

[*]Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?

Keep safe

Done all the cleanup and Java update. Don’t know how to repair Avast off the top of my head, would appreciate a link if need be, though as noted the UI not loading seems to be the only issue so far.

Nothing else has been an issue, though as noted I’ll keep an eye on everything, and proceed to download the FileHippo dealie. (And reinstall NoScript, too. My Firefox got so bogged down that I did a clean install but forgot to re-up on noScript for some reason. That could’ve been my downfall.)

OK to repair Avast go to Control Panel > Programs and features
Select Avast
On the left will be the repair option
