Is it now certain that virus definitions for Avast Home for Win98SE will no longer be available as of 2010? Earlier in the year there was no definitive statement, just want to know now so that I can get ClamWin, the only other free AV that still supports 98SE, to install in its place. Avast is the greatest, hate to give it up. Thanks.
There has been a definitive statement as you say and that was published on the avast web site, support would at least last until the end of the year (2009).
That hasn’t been updated, though one member of the Alwil team said that personally (not officially) he though support for avast 4.8 might extend 6-12 months after avast version 5.0 is released. So that would effectively mean support for win9.x, winME, etc. also being extended.
That however, isn’t official.
Thanks, but given that 2009 is quickly coming to a close, it might be nice to know where the Alwil “higher-ups!!” are finally on this matter. Further support for 4.8 is most re-assuring to those of us who genuinely value Avast. Perhaps you can get “THE ANSWER” from them ASAP. Thanks again, Ken.
I’m an avast user like yourself and only passing on what I have seen in the forums.
I am also a simple user of avast and I cross my finger that they will support me with W98SE after the end of the year! it would be a big lost.
If they keep it going at least another 6 months, that will be fine for me because I plan fairly soon to use XP PRO as my PC OS, increasingly, there are just too many excellent pgms that require XP as a minimum, then I can keep on using Avast.
