Is there a way to use Avast for just on-demand scans? I run KIS11.
Also, for a different pc, what would be the best way to clean a completely infested pc which sometimes cannot boot into windows? USB antivirus? some kind of livecd?
Not really, avast is designed to run as a resident on-access scanner with a self-defence module (can be switched off by the user). Yes you could try and disable the resident shields, but that wouldn’t stop the low level drivers and background services (yes you could disable those, but you wouldn’t have any on-demand either).
For a completely infected system it might well best to start from scratch, back-up what data you can (must be scanned before restoring), format and reinstall OS and programs. Whilst a live CD might do a reasonable job it entirely depends on what the infections are and how widespread.
(1) Even with realtime shields turned off i dont think it is possible, can’t have two av’s on a system at the same time. You are better to add malwarebytes as a secondary on demand scan or even better would be malwarebytes pro with real time but im not 100% sure if it is compatable with the new kis11 yet, you would have to ask on there forums. (2)I think also there is a malwarebytes portable to run from your usb. Sorry guys : DavidR : Pondus, my post came in late.
actually, his post seems to be saying never run 2 AV’s together in realtime… he suggests that some AV’s wont let u install them while another is installed but doesnt comment about the negatives of simply installing 2 AV’s. while that could have its own problems, that post doesnt show anything to ur point.
Even when one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone scanner, it can affect the other. Anti-virus software components insert themselves into the operating systems core........
And as he say, there is plenty of online AV scanners …or try Hitman PRO
hmm i guess i missed that bit, but anyways, the biggest problem with 2 AV’s is when there running realtime at the same time, ur far less likely to run into problems wen using it ondemand altho its not exactly advisable. some people do use avira free on demand ive noticed without issue.
