I struggled a bit (another thread) but now have avast pro up and running on a new computer. I am looking for some recommendations for a good firewall program. I had previously used Outpost Pro with another program but as I started to install Outpost Firewall Pro it complained about avast and recommended editing the registry to disable some of avast functions. What is everyone else using? Thanks…

I’m using PCTools on Vista. Windows Firewall on XP ones.
Hi melmitts707
Try searching “firewall” in the forum “General Category” > “General Topics”.
I’m also using Windows Firewall on XP which is perfectly compatible with avast! but I guessed you were looking for outbound protection.
On my Win2K PC I am using Jetico PF v.1x (the free one). No problem with AVAST.
Try Comodo! In my humble experience, for Windows XP, Comodo remains the best firewall, plus it is free!
+1 for Comodo. The latest version appears a bit more user friendly than the early Version3’s. Seems to play very well with Avast (or rather, perhaps, Avast plays well with it.)
Comodo is my choice too ;D and it works fine with Avast. Haven’t got any big problems with Comodo yet.
I recommend Comodo firewall, also. Excellent out/in bound protection, small footprint, free, very tight! Perhaps you can also try Sygate firewall, its not bad. But Comodo is my firewall of choice.
Many regards!!
OK! I seems Comodo will be the first choice so I will give that a try. Just out of curiosity about the Comodo recommendations, are you using the “free” or “paid” versions?
thank you to all who replied.
Mel
I didn’t know there were “pay” versions.
The paid version gives you help when infected (as far as I know). I wouldn’t do that. There is lots of free help if you have problems, so take the free version. It’s all you need.
Actually there is a Comodo paid version, its called firewall pro plus I think. But I’m using standard free version. Install, reboot, define which programs go to Internet and which aren’t and this is it ;). Nice and simple for beginners and experts alike. It will automatically set itself in learning mode, so if you don’t define rules yourself it will ask you. So don’t worry…
Many regards!
I’m using the Sunbelt-Kerio personal firewall. They have a free version that I used and then upgraded to the full version for $10.00. Works great!
It doesn’t do so well in these firewall tests, see http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php. and the company said they are developing another version.
Sunbelt Software – the vendor of Sunbelt Personal Firewall2008-03-24 (Sunbelt Personal Firewall scored 18%): Thanks for including us in your testing. Sunbelt Software is currently testing a new version of Sunbelt Personal Firewall (SPF), planned for release in Q2 2008, that addresses the majority of the leak tests that SPF 4.5.916 fails.
Have they released that new version yet ?
After really terrible experience with early version 3 of Comodo I started using Online Armor and now I would never go back to Comodo.
OA however is still not available for Vista where Comodo is the choice. For XP, Online Armor is the proper solution!
Hi JanP,
I have given up on the overbloated Comodo as well, now back with ZA free, no problems whatsoever,
