any “free” replacement for TaskInfo?
Process Explorer (www.sysinternals.com)
My vote to Process Explorer all the way…
Process Explorer just keeps getting better
Exactly, and if you put a checkmark next to REPLACE TASK MANAGER option, it will completely replace your old MS task manager… so simple CTRL+ALT+DEL will bring it immediatelly on your screen, no need for searching for it among all those Program Files installed on your system.
That is certainly a nice option to replace Task Manager, I’m not quite sure if I’m ready to go that far yet. I have a toolbar that I created for my most frequently used utilities and I create a shortcut to these in it. So I just click on my toolbar named ’ - ’ (so it doesn’t take up much space on the taskbar) and that displays all my utilities without having to go find them.
I don’t get it… how far David ? It simply replaces standard Task Manger, it does not wipe the old one out… it’s very easy to bring it back, just uncheck that option from the screenshot above, and your old task manager is back. Best thing with Process Explorer is that it has much more useful options than standard MS task manager will ever have. Can’t loose a thing by replacing it. It’s not permanent, not anything like some kind of non-undoable action.
The reason because I don’t have to go rummaging to find Process Explorer, I can get the shortcut link from the toolbar for my utilities shortcuts. If I ticked the Replace Task Manager, should I want to use that, first I would have to open Process Explorer and untick that option to access Task Manager.
It is not so much the replacing of Task Manager to speed up access to process explorer, I like Task Managers simplicity and is more than enough for everyday needs, when I need Process Explores more detailed information I use that.
So based on your suggestion that “no need for searching for it among all those Program Files installed on your system” (Process Explorer) I would then have to go searching/jumping through hoops to access Task Manager. That speed issue is why I created a toolbar to quickly access my utilities.
Yes I know… I have my toolbar too, it’s just I don’t want to clog it with stuff that can be hidden and in the same time highly accessible from simple CTRL+ALT+DEL… For me, there is nothing inside the standard Task Manager that I can’t find in Process Explorer… but of course, if someone needs to access just simple information, task Manager should be enough…
But as aways, millions of people, millions of different personal preferences.
The point is, Minacross started this thread to ask for replacement, so we gave him good information about what’s on the market…
