How to retain avast present setting when reinstall avast ???
eg: a backup in avast installation folder
Thank you
If you install avast in the same folder as before, just save avast4.db and avast4.ini. Some settings can’t be saved, but most of them will be there.
Edited to \DATA\Avast4.db
There really are only a couple of files that could be backed up and restored on re-installation, as Tech mentioned in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA folder one typo on a file name it should be avast4.mdb not avast4.md.
Thank you for your help.
But i can’t find the Avast4.mdb or Avast4.md. Just only Avast4.db.
I guess that operation system express the same file by different file names in different countries. ;D
Well it should be there or avast would have some problems I would have thought.
The operating system would have no differences in file type used for different countries as it is a file used by avast and it doesn’t care what the country is, it should be the same
See my image, are the file extensions shown in your windows explorer list, e.g. not a file just called Avast4, if so check the Type column and you should see a file type of MDB File ?
Note: don’t worry about the file sizes and dates in my image they are likely to be different from user to user.
DavidR, I don’t have that file too. The only file I’ve avast4.ini and avast4.db like pic below…
What is your operating system (I’m guessing Vista) ?
The only thing I can think of is that it might not be used with it, I use XP Pro.
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. If that brings it back great if not it looks like you are only going to be able to save avast4.ini.
The correct is \DATA\Avast4.db, sorry my fault.
Sorry Tech but it is the avast4.mdb file that is meant to be saved, a forum search for avast4.mdb and your user name returns many hits where you have given the advice to save the avast4.ini and avast4.mdb files. Is it present on your Vista Business installation of avast ?
I don’t know why it is missing in MeDIeVaL’s system or the originating poster’s system. We will have to wait for skysecret’s response.
I’ll try to repair it later. Now, got to take my dinner at 3.21 am :o I’ll let you know the result later. One more thing, just got the feedback from SAS. They said the false positive alarm on avast! program has been fixed with the latest update. I’ll scan my system while I go for dinner. Then I’ll let you know the result too…
P/S: I’m using XP SP2 with latest updates. The reason why it look likes Vista cause I’ve installed BricoPack Vista Inspirat 2 ;D
Very nice Theme, I would have tried it but a 27.6 MB download on dial-up would be in the region of 97-110 minutes download assuming a good line and no problems.
DavidR, I’ve tried as what you’ve suggested and even downloaded new avast! program then select change but still it won’t bring back the file. Do I really need this file, is it the critical part of avast! program?
Well since it I believe it contains some user information/settings I would have thought it important, but not so if it truly isn’t on your system then perhaps not. Have you done a complete search to ensure it isn’t elsewhere ?
I have had avast on my system for some considerable time and I don’t know if this might be a throwback to an earlier version, as you can see from my image above this is an old file with a last modified date of 14/4/2006. Where avast4.db is 5/10/2007 so it may be that avast4.db has superseded the .mdb format.
I guess we need someone at Alwil to confirm this now.
I can’t find it elsewhere even I’d show hidden file, uncheck hide ext for known file types and hide protected operating system files box. This is my D: drive which I’ve installed avast! about 2 months ago. I’ll check it at my C: drive later on.
There’s no avast4.mdb file in my C: drive either. Maybe you’re right, the file only exist with old version of avast! But still someone from avast! need to confirm about this. ???
This is the old ODBC storage method, I suppose.
There isn’t a mdb file in avast\data folder anymore.
Not in my Vista, not in XP…
Your file seems and old remain of avast, look the date.
I have it is in the image that I posted and acknowledged as 14/4/2006 and I thought it migh be a throwback to an earlier version.
However, I don’t see why it is still there there have been several program updates and I have taken part in the betas as well so I would have though the avast program updates would have cleaned up the debris.
Thank you for your focus the question
I download avast program from official website in september 8th 2007 after a new program update.
Please browse my photograph.
My operation system is windows xp home edition.By the way, i think avast is very nice ,just only small questions in compatibility. I believe avast will adapt to here when it enter into CHINA.
Your image looks fine, I believe the issue about avast4.mdb is a remnant of a previous version of avast. So your backup files would be avast4.ini and avast4.db before any reinstall.
Which questions do you have?
