A really odd problem

I started using Avast Home about 6 weeks ago and about 2 weeks ago my system developed a really odd problem. When I right click on the system tray icon and click “start Avast Antivirus”, the first time I do this the initial screen appears but the user interface does not launch (it will launch on subsequent attempts but exhibits the same system-wide behavior that I’m about to describe). After that, all menus (right-click or dropdown) throughout Windows and all third-party software open highly transparent (as in just barely even visible) until I move the mouse over the menu, at which time it takes a normal appearance. Following this, the first menu item I click on stays visible (the entire single menu line and whatever words may be on it) on my desktop (and on top of any open windows) from that point forward. After this, the menus all appear normal and everything works as it should, however that menu line on my desktop never goes away on its own. To get the menu item off the desktop, I can either reboot, log out and back in or momentarily change my display resolution (which of course reloads the entire desktop display). But of course that doesn’t end it, because once I force that menu item to clear off the desktop by anything short of a reboot, all the menus are back to the weird behavior and, again, the first one I click on after doing that stays on the desktop again. If I reboot, everything is perfectly normal until the first time I open the Avast user interface, then we go through this all over again.

The first attached image shows what my menus look like after trying to launch the user interface. The second shows how a menu line gets left on the desktop.

This is on Vista SP1, and no recent changes had been made when the problem first appeared. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Avast, but the problem remains. I really need some help with this, as this is very much a deal-breaker if I can’t get it resolved.

  • Edit the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini using Notepad [Common] section, add the following line to the section SunbeltKPFHack=2, save the file, you will be prompted by the avast! Self-defence module if this is OK answer Yes. Whilst this is primarily for Sunbelt or Kerio Personal Firewalls it may well work even if you don’t use either of these firewalls.

I have had help from windows live cause I don’t see at the top or the bottom of the page where you should see where you can start a new question. I could not even fine this part where you could reply to question. sense this is a odd problem too. I thought I do my 1st post here so I can at least get started. all I could fine was this help.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHERE TO FINE THE LOG WHERE ALL THE SCANS ARE KEPT? the only one I can fine is the one right after I scan. that one I can pull up. where are all the scans kept at the before and after?

also there is on the main menu is the log viewer that has nothing in it. I would thing that is where all the scan would go but there is nothing there. WHAT IS SUPPOSE TO GO THERE? there are other things on the menu I don’t know about either, but will just start with that part for now. I will ask one more question. when I click menu and click local disk it start a scan but I want a complete scan so I go to menu again and see where to click for a thorough scan that will start another scan after I click enter. I am not sure if I am doing it the wrong way. I maybe doing 2 different scans at one time and it takes most of the time over 2 hours to do the scan. is it wrong to to it that way? if it is how am I suppose to do it?

They aren’t kept on home (free) version, only in Professional.
When you close the interface you lose that logs.
You can use the reports option.

I had trouble signing up for your forum. I have got the code 5 or 6 time it won’t get activated. I did not see a spot to feel in for a secret question. I can not try to change the password because it won’t let me sign in.it can not ask me the question for me to answer so they know it is really me they are logging in. I did not see the questions I was to choose from. it registry me any way. no matter how I tried it won’t let me sign in. I could ask a lot of question about the free avast I am now using. before using avast I had one virus after another please help me!!! If so, the activation email probably got junked. I activated it for you.

I get the code and the password that I already new.and still cannot get in. I have received 5or 6 email with the key code and still cannot get in to the account. oh well. it did not do even if I tried to start new and I use the same email and it would not accept it.
