A salutary tale.

Disabled my virus protection to download a keygen thinking "Avast will fix it after I'm done" - well, I didn't know that Avast wasn't the end-all-be-all solution.

Now I have a rootkit called “abb54987.sys” In System32.

I have manually deleted all the .exe files from C:\ and My Documents… but the problems persist. I cannot manually start Automatic updates. I really did a number here.

I have tried running Ad-Aware twice, however each time I get a BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! I am afraid to try again.

Wow … really not a very smart move on the poster’s part. :frowning:

Anyway, downloading a keygen is just begging for trouble.

I really fail to understand why people think Adaware is so great at fixing such things.

Just plain crazy and a salutary lesson in don’t disable your AV to install anything, much less something as high risk as a keygen, aside from the moral and legal issues also.
