Hi,
I read a post about this same problem but my issue is not resolved.
I have had the red/white circle on the Avast icon for three days now.
I get the following error message when trying to update the database.
Error
avast!
A setiface error has occured: 2
Try to reinstall or contact support.
I get the following when trying to install the vpsupd.exe file
Cant install VPS update.
Report the following error codes
Ver 4.8.1201
SI:0x00000002
ST: 0x00000002
LE: 0x00000000
Also, when trying to reinstall or repair the programme I only see for a few seconds, two folder icons with what looks like data being transferred between them and then nothing…NADA,
Your avast is disabled! You’re without antivirus!
Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP, Vista?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
In addition to the original information, I can now categorically state that Avast has been crippled by something.
I cannot update the Virus database, I cannot delete and re-install the program itself.
I cannot delete any registry settings or any file relating to Avast.
The other things that I found today are
In the Virus database screen
where it says information about known viruses… press search
and it returns the following statement…‘vps file was destroyed’
Also Resident Protection stays disabled after choosing high. It reverts immediately.
I loaded AVG for a trial run and I am protected, but it found 38 files that were dangerous and deleted them.
OK, I read some other posts here and saw a utlity that you provide to delete avast.
I followed the instructions, re-installed and now all is fine again.
since you know that you WERE infected - that’s maybe WERE maybe STILL
run CCleaner or similar
update and schedule a “run on boot” scan
also a full scan with your favorite anti-spyware program
you might want to update your restore points and do a registry backup once you think you’re clean
did you run any of the recommended on line scans?
not a bad idea for a second opinion
usual advice to quarantine/ send to vault/ chest and not delete any hits
