A way to do a startup scan, before entering windows

hi all,

gonna ask for a little bit of patience here. My cousin, dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to computers, has an issue. he said within the last 24 hours he has had a trojan horse pop up. he said he deleted it. secondly, just out of the blue his computer automatically will boot into safe mode and freeze before completely loading. I tried to force a boot into windows, but it won’t run. I’ve checked to make sure it wasnt a temperature issue. I am guessing it is a virus, etc. is there a way to have it boot into safe mode without actually getting into windows and setting it up ?

thank you for your time

Welcome to the forums, whymeintrouble.

What is the OS of your cousin’s computer?

Deleting is not the best practice… send the file to Chest for further analysis.
Can’t you boot in Safe Mode pressing F8 while the computer is booting?

Sorry, the OS is windows xp home. it is a cheap little gateway he picked up for internet usage mostly, email, ebay, etc.

every time he tried to get it, it would freeze going into safe mode. you’d get to where it would load the safe mode screen, but it sounds like explorer.exe wouldn’t load. he told me it would just show safe mode and nothing else on the screen. i tried getting into task manager(contrl-alt-delete), wouldn’t work. tried getting the windows button, but that failed as well

I can only bet on an infection or hardware problem.
Maybe you can download Avira rescue CD. Download the file, or get someone to do it for you, double click on file, and you will be prompted to burn to CD. Insert CD into the infected PC and boot up. Choose option 2 for virus scanning. Choose language, then PRESS SPACE, then enter. The download is updated daily. Good luck and post back.
