Aavm subsystem detected a rcp error

My avast was working great untill norton antivirus accidentally got installed on my laptop. ::)Avast is still working great on all my other comps. I uninstalled all symantec software with the symantec uninstall utility. I also uninstalled avast again, reinstalled, then uninstalled with your uninstall utility. rebooted then installed again.
The desktop icon works properly, scanning as desired.
The round blue ball by the clock will not activate. and when I click it gives me the “aavm subsystem detected a RCP error”. When I try to click the link to read more about the problem in FAQs it says there is no application associated with it.
When I right click the blue ball (with the red inactive sign on it.) Trying to start on-Acess protection does NOTHING.
What now?

Wow… how could it do accidentally?
Did you follow the three step procedure removing NAV?
If you don’t have any other antivirus, I see no other reason for avast installation failure.

 Hi Deniece :

There are 2 slightly different Symantec/Norton "Uninstall Utilities" ; WHICH
  one did you use ?

In addition to "uninstalling" from "Add or Remove Programs" and using a
"Uninstallation Utility", perhaps it would be wise to use your computer's
"Search" feature, selecting "All files and folders", using the search "term"
"Symantec" and later "Norton" and "Delete" all appropiate Items !?

I “accidentally” installed norton antivirus when I thought I was only installing norton goback and had left one of the boxes checked when deciding which norton programs to install. Anyway. I used the Norton uninstall utility for the third time. (I didn’t see any three step process). I also did the searches you recommended and deleted all those files.
I ran a complete scan on the drives and found a virus, cleaned it and now avast works great. Thanks alot.

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info or here.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.

Full SymNRT info (the three steps):

  1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
    a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
    b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
    c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

  2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
    a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
    Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
    b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
    Click Run.
    Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
    c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
    Click OK.

  3. Boot.

Yesterday avast worked all day. This am when I booted up we were back to square one again. 1.I ran the Norton removal tool… avast worked great. 2. I did the three step process as you told me to and now it doesn’t work at all.
I cant run the removal tool every time I boot up again and again. Whats going on?
thanks, Deniece

Please, set the log level to Debug (the most bottom in the list of avast Log settings) and boot (or go until avast stop working). Then you can see if any relevant information is there.
I can’t imagine what’s wrong… sorry…

I set the logging to debug but how do I read the logs? I went to Log viewer and read the info but don’t know what any of it means.
By the way. Avast quit again so I ran a virus scan and found nothing.
As a side note, a friend told me last nite, that when she borrowed my comp that she installed a program called eblaster. It records all keystrokes and all activity and emails the results to an email address. It will be a nice feature if my laptop ever gets stolen. Maybe that’s what’s blocking avast.
I really dont’ think so because she has both programs on her laptop and both programs work great. Where do I go from here?

On contrary, avast should be blocking a keylogger activity, unless you set it into the avast Exclusion lists.

Please, post the last 100 lines of \Data\Log\Debug.log file.

I havent forgotton you its just that i’ve been really busy the last couple of days and I looked at the log, its not got very many lines on it cause I’ve been using my desktop instead of this one. I will send them as soon as I get them.
Also I found out a very strange phenomomen going on. The avast works sometimes when I boot up and sometimes it doesn’t.
If I see it isn’t working I boot again. sometimes it comes on the next time and sometimes it takes two or more boots to get it to work. WIERD!

So, did you try the usual procedure used when having the “rpc error” poblems?
http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=46

Thanks, I’m trying that right now. I did go on the avast knowledge base website the other day and search for that info but that article didn’t come up. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

 Hi Deniece :

I strongly recommend you get that "eblaster" program OFF your computer
ASAP ! How could it possibly EVER be a nice feature if your computer gets
stolen !? This program is used to SPY on the person who has it on their
computer . I suspect your friend is spying on you !? For reliable info, see :

 www.spywareguide.com/spydet_8_eblaster.html .

Note it has a "Danger" Level of 8, out of a possible 10 . Very bad .
Under "Properties", it says "Attacks security software" .

Thanks for the info. I just read the link you sent me. You’re probably right.

My avast is working real good now.
