I am really very rubbish at computery stuff, but muddle along. I got a hideous virus that I couldn’t get rid of so took PC in to be repaired and whilst there the PC dude installed the free Avast. I also have paid for Trend anti spyware.
Today everything went odd, and the on-access scanner won’t load. i read the advice and went and checked that it was on automatic, also tried the “Repair” option which seemed to work but still the scanner won’t start. i turned off and rebooted only to get a scary message saying that windows was checking file system C. It said the type of file is NTFS. it checked all then rebooted. Still the avast won’t work.
I am stumped. I ran the avast virus clean up but it didn’t pick anything up except it did say that 1 temp file could not be scanned.
The repair man told me not to run all the other stuff I used to as it battles with Avast.
Your PC dude didn’t do you any favours as it isn’t recommended to have two resident anti-virus scanners installed on the same system, they can conflict and possibly lock-up the system. To avoid this avast could simply be disabling elements of itself to avoid this conflict.
This error message is often associated with having two AVs installed on the one system, so I would suggest that you uninstall one (from the Add Remove Programs) and since Trend failed I would suggest getting rid of that.
The scary messages could be from a number of things and may have been if you turned off rather than shut down properly, the next time you switch on the system may do an integrity check.
I thought that Trend is just an anti spyware thing? And Avast anti virus? So the two were compatible.
The Trend Venus spy trap thing is working fine. It is the avast that has stopped loading. Oh gosh, I have no clue what to do. Avast is free whereas I have just paid for the Trend thing as well. They seem to have been working together well for a couple of months.
I so appreciate you taking the time to respond, and I apologise for being so clueless.
Sorry, Trend and avast are antivirus and they should conflict if they’re installed at the same time in the same computer.
Although they seem to have been working together well for a couple of months, most probably one of them was not resident or configured well.
Well, you can’t wait to stay just with the free avast, can you?
Hello again. I gave up last night and went to bed. Just turned on again and got this message
Microsoft visual c++ runtime library
C:\WHNDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
this application jas requested the runtime to terminate it in an tnusual way. Plecse contact the 'pplications susport team.
All the spelling errors are as they showed up.
There’s really something up as the screen bar at the bottom has gone all light, Avast still won’t load, outlook express won’t check for new mail and I am in despair. Help?
You may well have a problem possibly a trojan. If you wish you can give me a HJT log ( I have just completed the upperclassman logs at Geeks to Go and am now awaiting my live logs) but I am still under training and not particularly fast or you can go here for fully qualified help http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?s=7cffb5eddd09dc7f52d7cb0314d466ed&showforum=37
You might well have a virus that is disabling avast! based on the spelling and location C:\whndows\system32\ this warning which is clearly incorrect. Does this location exist in explorer ?
If it is infected (results of the above scans) take care not to go to the c:\windows\system32\ folder but the incorrectly spelt one, try renaming the svchost.exe file to svchostSuspect.exe. I can’t stress enough that you have to be certain that this is the correct file and not the real file in c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe as this could seriously harm your system as there are many services that use svchost.exe to run elements of your system.
IE doesn’t recognise that file so I couldn’t scan.
Something is up with the strat up, every time something different happens. Last time it said that Trend was corrupt and I should update which I did. (So, yes, Trend is still installed. I am loath to uninstal as it’s the only protection I have right now.)
Avast won’t start.
As my user name suggests I really am clueless so i find it hare to understand anything. One of you suggested showing an HJT log, but I wouldn’t know how to get that.
I guess I will have to put the pc back in for repair, which is ultra inconvenient as I have deadlines coming up and they always take days and days.
Thanks again. You are very nice people to freely spend time advising people.
Sounds like you could use the assistance of EXPERIENCED
Volunteer(s) that are on antiSPYWARE Forum(s) and you
would get the quickest help from the Experts on the
forums at www.landzdown.com . They would guide you
in a step-by-step process to resolve your problems .
What do you mean by doesn’t recognise or Do you mean you can’t find it in explorer ?
I appreciate that avast won’t start but having two resident scanners installed could well be complication matters so uninstall avast and reboot until you get this resolved.
