About ALWIL's staff

Hello, people! ;D
Do you know how many people work in ALWIL? How many specialists who can work with virus signatures include in it’s staff?
I have heard there are only two such specialists. If it true it explains why VPS updates sometimes take long time.
I’ve searched in Google, in avast!WEBforum and at the Avast website I clicked on “About”, but I’ve found nothing about it. ???

Do you know how many people work in ALWIL?
No not really and personally, I don't care as long as their great program keeps me safe.... :)
VPS updates sometimes take long time
They do??? Updates occur as needed and sometimes quite often. :)

Welcome to the forum.

I would imagine ALWIL’s Staff is Quite Small compared to other security companies like Symantec but their software is top notch so why does the number of employees matter?

I’m interested about their new staff members. I know most of the original team but i just briefly heard about few new virus analysts so there aren’t just 2 of them (anymore).

It’s well-known that a lot (more than 90% ::)) of Symantec employees work on sales and merchandising…

Sergofun, take a look here: http://www.avast.com/eng/company.html
The good is that we know the names of almost everyone there 8)

ALWIL currently has about 40 employees.

About half of that is in R&D; about 7 in the virus lab itself.

We expect these numbers to significantly grow in 2007 (yes, we’re hiring ;)).

Hope this helps,
Vlk

I think updates directly depend from number of virus analysts.
For example, VPS was updated to 0651-0 after 4 days. One man has found a virus, he sent it to virus@avast.com. After it avast! was updated 3 times and only in 4 update signature of this virus was included (VPS №0654-0) - 10 days left. :o
Then I’ve heard there are only two virus analysts in ALWIL and I thought “it explains everything”.
I’m using avast! Home Edition about 1,5 years and i like it! I think it’s the best antivirus I’ve ever used so i want to know all about this program and about people who made it.
Thank all of you for your answers.

Actually the frequency of def updates to avast depends on what’s happening on the net, not on the size of Alwil’s staff which has done a marvelous job. “Normal” schedule, when things are relatively quiet, is (or used to be) twice a week.

But if we’re in a “red alert” situation, when all hell’s breaking loose on the net, you’ll see as many as 3 or even 4 updates in a single day. Admittedly a tiny percentage of those are to correct false positives, which possibly sometimes due to the rush to get out updated coverage, but the team’s responded to fixing those quite quickly too.

Seems good

Vlk, nice to hear ALWIL is growing

Only virus analysts? ::slight_smile:

Hopefully also programers, waiting for that avast 5.0
Al968

And the final 1.0 release of Avast for OS X

Yes that also
When is the final version coming out ?

Thanks

Not too soon they found problems with the beta and as a result I dont even have it yet.

MikeBCda, you are right, it was better for me to said - there are two things, which directly have influence on updates:

  1. What’s happening on the net.
  2. Number of virus analysts in ALWIL’s staff.
You’ve said: “Normal” schedule, when things are relatively quiet, is (or used to be) twice a week. I’m sorry, but I don’t thing so.

Vlk, it’s really nice to hear that ALWIL is growing.
