About long use Avast free

How long can I use Avast free.
The registration from 21.05.2015 told me: 7. Click “OK” – your license key is now inserted and your avast! antivirus software can now be used free of charge for a further 12 months.
On 16th October 2015 my Avast does not work and it freezes my PC.
My Avast is currently registered.
I do not know why my Avast account has expired.
How long can I use Avast free.

Check that your system date is correct, adjust as required.

If correct try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 or later - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual data.

I did that on 16th October 2015 and successfully solved the problem.(OS - Xp)
The morning of 17 October 2015 the problem is back.
Repair program as the day before is impossible. (Click on the “Repair” and nothing happened).

If you haven’t tried it, I would suggest a clean reinstall of avast free.
Download - http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your hard disk.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, avastclear.exe http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe and save it to your HDD.
    1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs/Programs & Features, if you can’t do that start from the next step, reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

I forgot to write that I use Avast free for the past 5 years. There has never been any problems. Now in my Avast account I have a message that my license has expired and I was offered to make a purchase of one of the Avast products.
Is Avast free for me the past? If not I’ll try to do step 2. and 3. as you wrote.
What is your opinion?

If you are being told that your license has expired, it sounds more like you used a trial of one of the paid products as avast free has a Registration rather than a license.

I’m seeing I need to register, but this is more from having the avast 2016 beta version installed. But you will also see from the image that I have 27 days remaining. So one is wrong, I can’t have 27 days left an haven’t yet registered.

Avast still supports XP SP3 as you can see I also use XP on one of my systems and this is the one I prefer.

I would still suggest that you try a clean reinstall as previously mentioned.

Do you have experience with avastclear.exe. Do I need to make beck up of my files.
After step 2.

May I in step 3 in the normal mode to make download from - http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to my hard drive
install it and then reboot it.

Windows XP - 32 bits, SP2

I have used avastclear.exe many times (commonly when switching from a beta build to regular release) in over eleven years of using avast. Essentially it is a double check to ensure all avast files and registry entries are gone. It shouldn’t touch any other files. You shouldn’t have to make a back (I normally don’t if I have to use it) - that said, it never hurts to do a backup.

All of the downloading of the files (and saving to your hard drive) I mentioned is done before taking any other action. That is why they were listed first, before the action steps.

I have done step 2 successfully.

    1. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), once complete reboot into normal mode.-
      But the step 3 unsuccessfully.

    2. reinstall Avast free and boot.

During reinstall Avast from Hdd the following showed up:
Installing progressed up to 70% and then it started to unistall.
Finally I got the message that an error occurred before the end of the installation.

I’ve done step 3 again but this time I was connected to the Internet.
Reboot I could not do it because it is frozen computer again.
In safe mode all is the same as before the action.

Did you start with step one as you don’t mention it ?

If you can replicate the error again can you copy a screen shot and attach it ?

I also notice you are running XP SP2 ???
Latest version should be XP SP3

I missed that.

That could well be the spanner in the works - but avast should have given a warning about unsupported OS when trying to install ???

EDIT: It may be that the OP will have to install SP3 or go back to avast 2015 10.3.2218, which I believe was before the HTTPS changes in XP happened.

I tried to go back to avast 2015 03.10.2218 - unsuccessfully.
I informed about the minimum System requrements: XP Professional, SP2, 32 -bits.

The XP SP3 requirement is a relatively new situation (so that XP can scan HTTPS web pages) as it came in the avast 2015 version 2015.10.3.2223 and was further modified in 2015.10.4.2233. Which presumably were trying to install.

So the version before that 2015.10.2.2218 would be the earliest version you could use with XP SP2 without the HTTPS scanning function incorporated. https://www.avast.com/release-history

Unfortunately the method used to be able to do that didn’t work in XP SP2, but they have managed to be able to do it with XP SP3 in avast 10.4.2233.

Yesterday, October 20, 2015 I looked at information about Avast Minimum System Requirements on the official website Avast.com.

To given the importance of the brand Avast.com, for me the data presented above unconditionally should be accurate.
The mentioned Avast Minimum System Requirements
with my Windows XP / SP2, 32 -bits, 512 MB of RAM and 15GB of free space on the hard disk
my computer meets that criteria.
I visited also Avast.com store and got a notice that my computer is compatible for their products.

I was on 16 October 2015 a registered user of Avast Antivirus when
it stopped working.

On my account was illogical notice that my license has expired. Since 2010 I’ve always used the only free version.

Yes it should be correct, but personally I feel that Minimum Requirements are way out of date as 512MB of RAM for XP is overly optimistic.

Even without avast 512MB of RAM on XP is a bottle neck and you are going to be switching data out of memory into the pagefile.sys and back. This is going to show as general hard disk thrashing and sluggishness, bring that up to 1GB or better 2GB of RAM and you are going to see noticeable system performance improvements.

So I always take system minimum requirements with a pinch of salt, but as far as OS limitations, that should be correct.

What I can’t get over is how you were allowed to install the latest version on XP SP2, the reason I say this as in the beta testing done before they were actually testing different beta builds which should have been declined if on XP SP2.

Now I am using Avast Beta 2016.
I think that works but to my Avast account can not reach.
Can someone help?

If you are trying to reach it via the avastUI - try connecting via your browser as this seems to be an avastUI issue.
