does it has the intention to work like inputing urls in host file?
blocking sites systemwide?
It is not as powerful as the HOSTS file.
For example, it can’t block https sites.
Well, “not as powerful”… on the other hand, it can block full URLs based on wildcards, not just a list of domains.
True, I never thought of that particular advantage.
But it would be nice if a way was ever devised to block SSL with Avast!'s site blocking. Though I get why it does not, the WebShield ignoring SSL as it does, a lot of people I know try to use it and immediately think it is broken because it cant block https sites.
Personally I find the URL blocker to be an excellent free service. I thought I would take the time to say thannk you avast team for this feature. =D
well i thanks avast for this service too.
just wanted to know comparing to add these to host file

Editors Note: in most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. To resolve this issue (manually) open the “Services Editor”
- Start | Run (type) “services.msc” (no quotes)
- Scroll down to “DNS Client”, Right-click and select: Properties - click Stop
- Click the drop-down arrow for “Startup type”
- Select: Manual (recommended) or Disabled click Apply/Ok and restart. [more info]
or …let OpenDNS and Malwarebytes IP block handle it for you
This site block feature is very usefull.
I usually put the following strings:
http:///.scr?
http:///.exe?
http:///.cpl?
http:///.pif?
http:///.bat?
To block the download of dangerous extensions in machines used by people that dont have any good sense when downloading files. After that, I didnt have any problems with infection is this machines…
