access denied in external hard drive

HI,

I was using my laptop running windows XP and a virus alert popped up… so I ran a virus scan on safe mode. It found infected files in my system folder as well as in some of my system restore files… so i moved them all to chest. but when I tried to reboot my laptop, had a black screen after windows XP welcome screen, tried everything to get it going but nothing worked, tried safe mode, tried last known configuration… I couldn’t even load a cd/dvd… So I removed my hard drive, put it in an external case and hooked it up to my desktop computer (running Vista)… I can access all of my files and folders but as I am running a scan of the external hard drive (drive K), access is denied when I try to move infected files to chest… I can’t rename or delete them either.

I tried changing permissions on the K drive but I don’t know if I did it right because it still doesn’t work.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Marlene

edit: I just finished the scan and noticed that it put a copy of my log in both avast folders, the one on my desktop and the one that is on my K drive (laptop hard drive)… should I delete one on my K drive?

I wish an official word from Alwil to what can we do in this situation: a file needed to boot is sent to Chest…
The problem I see with automated actions of File Shield of avast 5 that is coming.

yeah…I got a baaaaaaaaaaaaaad feeling about this :o …;too.

So what does that mean… am I screwed??

My laptop still has the black screen and I still can’t do anything… I really don’t want to do a restore but I did manage to get my important files off the hard drive…

Marlene

Welcome to the forums, marlenefromcanada.

Since you have removed your important files from the hard drive, I suggest that you restore back to some day before you had this problem. Once you have done that, you should turn off restore, restart your computer, turn on restore again, and then create a new restore point.

Thanks Charley,

I suppose I used the wrong word… I can’t restore since I can’t even log on… I have a complete black screen… even safe mode only shows up with a black screen… I can’t do anything… I am trying to avoid the hassle of doing a complete wipe out of my hard drive.

I am wondering why I keep getting access denied message when I try to remove virus from my external hard drive…

Thanks,
Marlene

you could attempt a restore in safe mode. To go into safe mode, hit the f8 key (several times if needed) very quickly as soon as Windows starts (blinking cursor after the bios screen).
