Accidentally deleted a file...

I haven’t had any security software on my Macbook Pro in the two years I’ve had but after seeing that Apple no longer advertises it’s computers as “virus-proof” (I knew before buying that the only reason they don’t get viruses that often is because most people don’t bother writing them for Macs) I decided to download Avast because of the stellar reviews. It did the scan and it found nothing except for a few warnings. Thinking it would just get rid of whatever was setting off the software that something was a possible threat, I hit “Delete” on one of my files thinking it would just delete the source of possible infection (which has been the case for every single piece of security software I used when I was back on Windows). It however deleted the entire file. The file isn’t in my trash can (though I didn’t expect it to be there) so is there anyway to get it back? It’s not a file crucial to system operation - it was a movie file of my niece’s first steps so I’d like to get it back if at all possible.

Thanks!
