- it’s 6.0.303 (the latest version, just gui is reporting it wrong, don’t ask me why).
- it doesn’t call home except AOL toolbar (if you haven’t unchecked it that ain’t my fault)
- only thing that it lacks is HTTP scanner and Proactive Defense and few minor settings, everything else is the same as in retail KAV
- anyone can use it, not just AOL subscribers
- it’s not crap just because it has word AOL written on it…
It’s exactly what I said:
it’s a crippled strippped down version.
RejZoR, is it a time-limited version, I mean, won’t update after that or not?
Could it be a non-resident scanner?
Just thinking of having KAV after all this time I’m listening good things of it…
Tech right now it’s a one year offer and it’s resident.
For non resident, there’s always ClamWin.
Does it allow to install as a second non-resident scanner?
Well, as far I know, Kaspersky has one of the best detection rates.
ClamWin is far from that (yet)
Worth noting that its only available to US members .
I’ve still had it on my laptop to see how it does, but so far so good, no fuss, no problems, I feel it’s very light and no slow down.
I think it’s a very good deal to get Kaspersky technlogy for free, even it’s a stripped-down version but it’s very worth to get the full auto update almost hourly and full protection from viruses, worms, trojans, adware, spyware, riskware, rootkits from its real-time file/mail scanner.
Well no one ever said you couldn’t renew it after 1 year. It’s still far away, but who knows. Maybe we’ll be able to renew it for another year…
I agree on detection. I can’t agree you call it a ‘full protection’.
But can it be installed as a non-resident? Is it only for EUA users?
Does anybody manage to install Active Virus Shield as a second, non-resident, antivirus or this is impossible?
Or remove… or nothing…
Worse than this is that BitDefender is not a resident and it did not detect ClamWin :
Bump… No answers from nodoby…
TAP seems to be using it :

RejZor was testing it too :
Yeah i was testing (and using it) but since there is some shitty crashing problem with it i went to BitDefender 10… We’ll see what i’ll use when someone solves that problem (MS or KL i don’t care).
Regarding “just on-demand”. You can’t make it pure on-demand as it will always have to run 1 process (service) to operate correctly. Otherwise it won’t work as far as i remember. Simuilar to how BitDefender free works…
BitDefender could run as on-demand only… you need only to start the services before using it. A script does it easily.
Problem with AVS is that I can’t even manage the installation… it does not allow custom installation :‘(
I could ‘extract’ the contents of the file and have, in theory, the files of the final installation… but, of course, without the files in system folders and registry keys, no way… it does not work.
I wish I could test the Kaspersky engine without the resident :’(
