the page i looked at davidr had only 6 reviews on it for ad-aware 2007 not for the older personnel one
5 of the 6 8) wish they would of left the old version alone :-X
Pros: This new version of adaware finds more spyware and adware then ever before. Prettier interface, More friendly, and it does the job for me ![]()
Cons: This version has a new bug. It deleted all my cookies without my knowledge. This has never happened before, with other versions of adaware. And I had to reenter all my passwords again My advice: Download at your own risk
I’ll stick with the old version
Pros: It’s probably great, but doesn’t work on Vista.
Cons: Program crashes before you finish.
Good but still obtuse
Pros: Does a thorough scan of what are probably the most significant threat areas of my computer – even on “quick scan.” Somewhat nicer interface. It seems a bit faster than the previous version.
Cons: Threat descriptions are not helpful. AA found 2 registry entries flagged as “3” on their TAI scale. But gave no help as to what these were, why they were suspicious, etc. No help in the right-click menu either. It will catch numerous cookies, not all of them are threatening, however, so be careful what you delete (especially the 1st time – mark your keepers on your ignore list).
Does not work on Vista.
Pros: I’m a big fan of Ad-Adare, but this one is not ready for prime time.
Cons: Does not work on Vista. Maybe it’s not supposed to but I thought that was one of the goals. Scan runs but program terminates at end of scan before results can be reviewed. Also, when I uninstalled it, it completely REMOVED my paid Ad-Aware SE Plus that I had been running sucessfully for a year! THANKS LAVASOFT!
Pros: Great improvement on the interface and perfomance. I’ve notice that uses less system resources. I’ve always trusted AdAware to get the job done.
Cons: None so far!
Thanks for the reviews, it more or less confirms my original point, I don’t think it is ready yet and stick with the SE Personal version for a little time.
but i guess the SE Personal version won’t update anylonger unless you want the ad-aware memory eater in background 2007 :![]()
and just posted this in the castlecops ad-aware section of the forum…

i installed ad-adware 2007 free yesterday and notice in my task manager processes it was taking on the average of 30,000K in memory usage without being on-why is this so-this is the free version and is just a scanner not on realtime like ad-aware plus with ad-watch-can i disable it when not being used or what is the reason for the memory usage
not saying i already uninstalled it…just seeing if i get an answer…probably no luck on the ad-aware forum if ever :![]()
also posted the same there :

Don’t hold your breath for a response on the lavasoftsupport.com forum, I’v now been waiting 14 days and not a single response.
who knows davidr-i could get lucky(yeah!right) ![]()
and i answered your thread in the ad-aware forum ;D
at least someone answered :![]()
The 30M memory belongs to the adwserivce (the name of the process may not be precise but close). This service is because ADware 2007 offers a new function, “scan in the start-up”. However, this service will be activated no matter whether you launch this function.
One way to release memory is to change the setting in the “service” through the control panel. Change the setting from automatic to manual. In this case, this service will still be activated when you launch the ADware 2007. When you finish scan and close this application, you can stop this services from the control panel.
Hope this can help.
its aawservice.exe and could i just use the kill task function in winpatrol to stop the process until i need to scan with ad-aware again ???
One way to release memory is to change the setting in the "service" through the control panel. Change the setting from automatic to manual.cannot find that :P
Killing the task in winpatrol wouldn’t stop it starting automatically on the next boot.
Type services.msc in the windows Start, Run window and look for the aawservice, stop it and then set it to manual.
i stopped it davidr-just do this each thing after i run a scan to turn it off ???

As pointed out at the CastleCops forum, other anti-spyware products do leave services running even when installed as on-demand scanners.
SUPERAntiSpyware Free was the worst offender for me. Although it’s a good spyware remover, I never get spyware, so keeping it installed just hogged resources.
a-Squared has a service running, but resource usage is minimal- a2service.exe 440K.
AVG Anti-Spyware Free usually has guard.exe running, although I can’t see it today. Again, resource usage is pretty minimal. This is the explanation for why the service has to run continually:
The Guard.exe checks for example the Windows host file for suspicious entries that would deny the update of the AVG AntiSpyware. The Guard process should not be terminated.

I suggest that for those who do get the occasional spyware infection, leaving the service running might make sense. For those of us who don’t, it perhaps doesn’t make any sense.
I imagine having more than one on-demand scanner with a large background service running is going to have some negative effect on performance, so perhaps having Ad-Aware Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free installed together is something to advise against.
you know FwF my friend-i could understand maybe 5-10,000K running in the background-could live with that-but why a hogging amount of 30,000 and its the free version not the plus where the realtime requires some background.
for now i have been killing the task with winpatrol plus or run-services.msc and stop it when its not started and scanning and if i get tired of doing this bs for much longer unless ad-aware 2007 does something about it after all the complaints its probably getting it will go the way of the add/remove programs for good one more time and for the last time(2md install-i know polonus the curious side of me got to me again) :

Ad-Aware has been criticised here for poor malware removal; SUPERAntiSpyware is praised a lot for its malware removal rate. I guess it’s a case of damned if you don’t, and damned if you do. SUPERAntiSpyware leaves a whacking great service running, yet nobody objects. If the new Ad-Aware has the same sort of removal success, maybe the program will deserve some praise. Like SUPERAntiSpyware, it may no longer be a program to keep around if you like a lean, mean machine, but that might not be a bad thing if it can remove more infections.
Haven’t decided whether to keep it: just killing the aawservice.exe in Task Manager for now.
Hi FwF and drhayden1,
Why don’t you download Hitman Pro then, a complete anti ad/spy-ware Windows XP shell program with all the goodies (Ad-Aware etc. included) on board. Run it occasionally, clear (delete) it from your machine, because of the trial proggies there, and reinstall the fresh version once you want a cleansing routine the next time. Firms to do that on a regular basis charge you 80 bucks an inspection for that. It is just an idea for the CPU aware here. http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu7zjnWpGnLYAGWJXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTB2cGpzZHNxBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xvA2UEdnRpZAMEbANXUzE-/SIG=12a6984fa/EXP=1181478755/**http%3A//www.techspot.com/downloads/1278-hitman-pro.html

You would be better served by setting the service to Manual after you stopped it using services.msc, so it never starts and start it when required.
I use a batch file (for starting the AVG service) in my C:\ folder and a shortcut in the taskbar quick launch to start it only when required.
Create a file called ‘StartAawSvc.bat’ (or any name .bat you feel like) using notepad or your favourite text editor. There is only one line of text e.g. Net Start “AVG Anti-Spyware Guard” the text between the " " is the Service Name (copy from the Services window) it must have the quotes around the Service name, save the file, create a shortcut and your done.
i already have full version of spyware doctor as my realtime and i have spyware blaster in the background and i use cwshredder on occasion so there is no need for hitman pro davidr since probably most of them are trialware…
and thanks davidr and FwF for the advise…will probably just kill the task in winpatrol since that is the same as services.msc for the time being making up my mind in time whether i want to keep ad-aware giving me a headache 2007 pain in the computer memory background piece of software :
![]()
i know whenever i had to reboot it auto.starts so i have to kill the task when i reboot until i do the manual thing unless i do the add/remove thing first :-*
Unless you can set the service to manual in winpatrol it will be back on the next boot, unless you are killing it completely and that is I believe unwise. Even if you are able to set it to manual you have no quick way to start it when you do need it.
i’m not gonna worry about it anymore davidr my friend ;D
its going the way of the add/remove programs-its has been a headache for the last day or so and you and i have better things to do then a piece of software that shouldn’t have the thing its doing and guess no reply in your false positive thread in the ad-aware forum(except from me)
soon as i hit the post tab below ad-aware 2007 is HISTORY 8) :o :![]()
edited and updated-it’s GONE ;D

‘Killing’ with WinPatrol will set the service to ‘disable’ mode. Not a file will be detected, only the service won’t start.
I haven’t tested the new version of Ad-aware yet. I’ll post later what we ‘lose’ when the service is disabled…
Testing ad-aware, the service could be disabled or set to manual.
You will only lost: resident shield, scheduled scannings and updates.
Neither of these features are present in the free version. Indeed, it would be good, in the free version, does not even install the service in my opinion.
