Add Security Exception

Hi to all

I have been using Avast Free on an XP3 desktop and an XP3 laptop[ACER] for a number of years and have had no problems.
I use Thunderbird as my email client and my ISP is Virgin Media.

For a couple of weeks there have been a few problems with sending and receiving in Thunderbird, but four days ago the problem was resolved by VM.

Since Sunday 3 April I have been unable to send and ‘Get messages’ on the laptop where I have 3 email addresses.
I also have 3 email addresses on the desktop, which are working OK.

On the laptop on which I cannot send or receive, I keep getting the Add Security Exception window pop-up which indicates it is generated by Avast, with regard to ‘this site attempts to identify itself with invalid information’ - ‘unknown identity’ - the certificate is not trusted…’ I would attach, if allowed, a screenshot but I cannot do this because I cannot send it from the laptop.

Both computers are running the same version of Avast 11.1.2253.

On another forum it was suggested that I disable Avast and try that. I did this, very quickly for one email address and a dozen or more messages were downloaded to that email Inbox.

VM are adamant that this is not their problem.

I have checked through and compared all settings etc in the Avast programme on the desktop and laptop and can find nothing differing.

I have also searched within this forum but could not find any current issue - a couple a few years ago - regarding this subject.

I have tried no troubleshooting or suggestions - not many - via a general web search on Google.

I look forward to getting some help with this.

Make sure the certificate is imported correctly.

Hi Eddy
Thanks for your quick response and the link.
I followed the link through to Fig11 but did not get the next after ‘OK’.
However, I went into my email client and was able to get all messages on all three addresses and was also able to send to all others.
I did note that the SLL box was already ticked previously?

As I could not progress from Fig11 to the next steps, does it matter?
Can I now delete the download MailShield folder?
In addition, in the past I have disabled the scanning for any virus in and out with email, in the antivirus I used to use. I have always considered is not to be required.
Can this be done in Avast - I have never considered to do this so far? I believe this can be done in Main Settings? I no longer use newsgroups.

Thank you.

Scanning of email (both incoming as outgoing) is needed nowadays.
incoming: You don’t want to get infected mails
outgoing : You don’t want to send infected mails to others

Disabling/removing the mail shield will stop the scanning when sending/receiving with a email client.
I don’t know if it possible to disable disable scanning web-based mail as I do not know where this part of avast is located in the application.

As for your problem, if the certificate is imported in Thunderbird it should work without a problem.
Check Thunderbird if it has the certificate.
If not, perform a repair of avast and see if it solved the problem.
If the problem is not solved, perform a clean installation of avast.

Many thanks for your help.
My email client is working properly as of this moment and has been since I followed your guidance.

I note your comments regarding the scanning of in/out emails - perhaps Avast scan differently to other software.
Avast must be one of the few that consider this a need as I cannot say I have heard of any of the other major antivirus
providers changing their view on this subject.

I still cannot see why I had this problem on the laptop and not on the desktop?

Keep up the good work.

It is hard (if not impossible) to tell why it didn’t worked and now does.
My guess is that the update of avast repaired something that made it work.

Yes - as so often is the case with applications/software.
