ADMN internet access

Hi all,

I’m the administrator of a small network (1 server, 4 desktops and 6 laptops [only 3 of which are usually connected] in a workgroup). The company is in managed offices and at present we only have 4 IP addresses with internet access and the server is not one of them.

In order for all the PC’s to have up-to-date AV protection, I have to use the ADMN. I’m pretty new to all of this and I’m getting the feeling I have bitten off a tad more than I can chew :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m having a lot of problems getting this all setup so you’ll likely see a lot of me.

I’m still using the trial version so that side of things is fine.

As the server doesn’t have internet access, I’ve made one of the more powerful workstations with internet access, the AMS.
I’d rather have the SQL service running on the server, with one of the workstations that has internet access downloading the updates for it.
I have never used SQL before, and I’m just wondering if this kind of setup is possible, or if I should stick with what I’ve got?

Thanks
HL

This setup certainly IS possible. However, I’m not sure if it is necessary. I mean, what exactly do you call “IP address”? The server doesn’t have any kind of Internet connection? I.e. you can’t even browse the web from it?

Thanks

We are in managed offices, and we are using their network infrastructure and internet access. They have setup multiple VLANs, for all the different companies that reside in the building.
With the subnet that we have been provided, we have paid for 4 specific IP addresses to be put into their NAT pool, so only those 4 IP addresses have internet access.
Whichever PC we assign those Static IP’s to, have internet access.

The PC’s that have those IP addresses are:

-Email Server (actually a Workstation OS. Permanently on)

-Main Office Desktop (This one is also permanently on as it hosts GoToMyPC, incidentally, this is the one I have chosen for the AMS)

-Main Office Desktop number 2 (The computer I am usually stationed at, and is the one with the AMS remote console. This IP address is sometimes swapped around, but not very often)

-2nd Office Laptop (The Director’s Laptop, usually in the office even if he isn’t. The IP address is sometimes used elsewhere, but very very very rarely.)

So as you can see, the Server doesn’t have internet access, and we don’t really have an Internet-enabled IP address to spare (the prices they charge are extortionate).
All the server handles is filesharing and the filemaker server service.

I’m looking into alternative possibilities that will give us internet access on all machines, but getting the information out of the building IT staff is like blood from a stone.

OK, thanks for the clarification.

In this case, my recommendation would be
