ADNM - CPU Hog

Well I am having problems with ADNM, the major one (among many) is that when the ADNM Server is started, it causes the SQL engine to chew up 100% of the server CPU time, which is renders the entire server unstable and unusable.

I am running windows 2003 SBS R2, with the SBS Suite, I upgraded from a trial edition, but I’ve had to reinstall avast 4 Server twice (once because it did not update the license correctly and caused a crash during shutdown, and the second time to make it connect to the ADNM server).

The service in question is the ADNM server, and its ajoined MSDE SQL server package, when ADNM runs SQLServ.EXE jump to chew up 98% of the CPU, is there any way to fix this?

Is the CPU usage steady - or does it come in peaks?

Its steady when it starts up, quickly rises for chew up all my CPU and then just stays there, I left it running for 10 minutes, the system just became very unusable on the console.

In this case, you might’ve met a problem that we identified in the current version of the AMS server software. If you wish, you can try the pre-release build of the next version (that should fix it).

Would you be interested?

The update is sheduled to be officially released in the 2nd half of January.

Thanks
Vlk

Sure I am interested, but do I have to reinstall everything once the official patch is released? Or will it just update to that version?

I have the same problem but only when I try to delete a Client-side Task in Sessions. The completed task will not delete, a week ago I would get a timeout notice from avast! but now nothing and the sqlserver.exe hogs the CPU and stays there until I reboot the system. I’m using Windows 2000 Server with your standard suite.

Johanne, is this problem still hapenning? Is it always reproducible?
If so, do you think you could help us simulate the problem in our lab by providing us with a backup copy of your ADNM database? I.e. run a backup task, ZIP the resulting .dat file and e.g. upload it to ou ftp site ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (please note that you will only have WRITE access to the server, not read).

Cheers
Vlk

Yes, it’s still doing it. I ran a back-up task but I get a .bak file not .dat. I’ll upload that file just the same in case you meant to write .bak

Please try updating your ADNM version to 4.7.608 (released just today). Chances are it will help.

Thanks
Vlk

I will try this and let you know.

Since I will update the ADNM, at the same time, I will update the managed client and server edition, I have a question regarding these two softwares. When I launch avast at the server, the window that appears says avast 4.7 server edition, yet the interface window that appears is the managed client.

Was I supposed to install the managed client at the server? If yes, how do I know if the server edition is updated when I run update VPS with program update? If no, should I uninstall the managed client at the server and the appropriate interface for the server edition will now run and I will be able to do a server edition update from there or do I need to download the lastest full version from your website?

Thanks

I’m a bit confused. What version are you running on the server, exactly? The About dialog should give you this info.

And do you see the server machine in the Computer Catalog in the ADNM console? Is it communicating?

Thanks
Vlk

  1. ADNM has been updated. Has not fixed the database.

  2. When I installed the standard suite, this is what I did. Installed ADNM, pushed managed client to all PC and server (runs the ADNM (this is a small office PC tower on steroids that runs windows 2000 server and contains all data)) and then installed server edition to this same tower. I assume by your reaction I may have done this incorrectly. It now runs the latest update and it now shows correctly when I launch the program from program files. In the ADNM under Computer Catalog, the server is there but it says that the VPS version and Engine version “not installed” and the icon is grey. In the summary window for the server, it shows that it is running version 4.7.726 with VPS 000711-0 under avast and under ADNM agent it says installed products "no supported products is installed but does show the Agent GUID. So I guess this is fixed now in terms of the server edition, but what about the computer catalogue listing in the ADNM. Should it show VPS version and Engine version “not installed”? Should try to uninstall the managed client form the server?

In AMS Maintenance Tool there is a delete and reinitialize the database. Should this be done to fix the problem and if so what can I expect. Do I loose all the workstations listed in the computer catalogue?
