Advice for ex-Norton 360 users

I had the following problem after uninstalling Norton 360 and installing avast! 4…
avast! 4 when running, wouldn’t allow connection to the internet by browsers, email, and to update, download virus definitions.

The problem was ‘remnant’ bits from Norton 360 not removed by the uninstall.

I solved the problem by downloading Norton_Removal_Tool.exe and buDump.exe from the Symantec website. After running these applications (which totally removed Norton 360), avast! 4 is now working perfectly.

My computer is now running well (and fast). The Norton 360 background scans (which could not be stopped) were making my computer totally unusable. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums and the avast! family.

It never ceases to amaze me how after years and years this remnants of Norton hasn’t been resolved in their windows add remove programs uninstall, surely it isn’t beyond their collective intelligence. Norton has been a pig to remove for years.

So I have to guess it isn’t that they cant do it (or the SymNRT wouldn’t work either), just that there isn’t a desire to do it and I would have to wonder why. If you uninstall one program and install another and you experience problems with that other problem, many would just give up and go back to the devil they know.

Norton 360 removal is painful. Even worse is Symantec Endpoint Protection on a SBS 2003 box. It took me 33 days to remove it. I used several removal tools that the support at Symantec sent me. Three of these crashed the server, one corrupted the Exchange database. Symantec/Norton AV products should be classified as viruses. :-\

Advice: Avoid any AV that has the name Norton or Symantec on it.

Fortunately this user wasn’t running a server OS, but I think your right in avoiding Sym and NAV, life is too short for the hassle.
