After installing avast i cannot access the internet.

Bring you up to speed on my situation.

Bought a new computer 2 weeks ago. Downloaded the free avast for anti-virus and it worked fine. My computer came with a free trial of norton anti-virus and the curiosity got the best of me and on thrusday i decided to try it out and i set it up. Soon after doing that i couldn’t access the internet. My computer had internet access as i could download software updates and i could not figure it out. i un-installed norton and could surf the web so then i again downloaded the free avast and then the problem came back. so i un-installed avast and now i can surf the web again. right now i am running without an anti-virus. any help would be appreciated.

Most of the time when you remove an antivirus, remnants of the program are still on your computer, and it causes conflicts with the new software.

I suggest running the Norton Removal Tool as described by their own Solutions Library:

Don’t worry about the steps about saving your product key, just skip to the “removal tool” instructions.

After that part is completed, I’d run Avast’s removal tool and follow the respective instructions on this page: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Once that is done, try installing Avast free again by downloading from here: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

See if that helps any.

Similar case here. After installing avast and upgrade to pro I have no internet access and no pop3 and smtp. I figured that disabling www shield and mail shield helps, but it is dangerous (I’ve bought avast to protect, not to disabling protection). PC was brand fresh new WITHOUT any preinstalled anti-virus. I have Win 7 Professional x64 installed (by myself), few user profiles with administration privileges.

I will try to uninstall it using avast removal tool and reinstall it again, but still I’m surprised - I’ve never had such “features” before, but before I had avast 4 pro and upgrades and different OS (XP) so this is different story.

I’ll tell you, if “uninstall and install again” workflow help me in my next post.
