After Update to 18.5.2342-User Profile service failed the login.

I updated my Win7 pro desktop and after reboot, my login failed with the message ‘The User Profile service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded’. I rebooted again and same message. I had to run windows repair to be able to login again. Avast still says it needs an update to this new version. Is this a known issue? I’m hesitant to try it again or update my other machine and end up with a boat anchor I can’t fix. Using Avast Internet Security. Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

I’ve used Avast Internet Suite for years. The only other software I have installed is Malwarebytes however MB is not installed on the machine having the issue. I’ve never had any issues updating Avast with Mb running on the same machine but I’ve yet to update that machine. Thank you for replying

  1. Download Avast Internet Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

PS: Regarding Avast & Malwarebytes, see: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/200324-exclusions-for-avast-users/

Well the same problem just happened to me. I have win 7 home premium. I updated avast yesterday but didnt reboot the computer. Now I turn it up and voila: “user profile service failed the logon”.

@Asyn-Thank you so much for information! I’ve printed that out and will add those exclusions to my other machine. My one with the problem I wasn’t aware Avast had an uninstall utility I could download.

@jm.asins-Can you go to Windows in safe mode and use a restore point before the update?
Press the F8 key before the Windows logo appears on your screen.
At Advanced Boot Options, select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
Press Enter.
Type: rstrui.exe.
Press Enter.

@Asyn-Thank you so much! I forced my PC to safe mode and the uninstall and reinstall afterwards worked like a charm. I just did it with my other PC, worked fine also!

One question: I’m assuming the link you provided for the Internet security was the same as if I had downloaded the trial version from the Avast website? A relative appears to be having issues but I don’t remember which Avast product she has. Have a great Sunday and thank you!

You’re welcome.
