after update virusengine my license disapears

Hello everybody,

Since this afternoon when I try to update my virus database, the update just doesn’t finish and when I open the Avast interface I get some messages that say my avast isn’t activated and I need to enter my licence key, but at the same time, my avast says it’s fully protected.

This all happens since I did a system restore due to some problems with my windows, maybe it has something to do with that?

Yeah, the system restore probably mucked something.

Since the install itself seems to be fine, only your registration was affected, just re-enter your license, or if you didn’t save it, see here for getting one re-sent>>http://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php

Strange, never faced a registration problem due to system restore.
Please, upload (attach) the avast log:
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

@Gargamel360: First of all: thanks for the fast reply!

Yeah, I just don’t trust it because I did the system restore after I got some problems with avast locking down the internet and some strange windows-behavior in safe mode.

Running some scans with Malwarebytes etc now, think I’m going to wait for those results.

@Tech: Here you go! (Included only ±last 500 lines)

I’ve found nothing on the small log. Maybe in the full one…

Hmm, I’ve uploaded the full log to dropbox.
Here’s the link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29409272/Setup.log

A scan with malewarebytes’ resulted in nothing, so I assume it has nothing to do with an infection?
Well, I just restarted my computer and Avast says everything is fine, but when I try to update, the program says again my license isn’t OK and I have to activate the trial license. So there only is a problem after trying to update.

Little update:
Now I get an ‘Avast has stopped working’ message on startup.
Also the following error: ‘Failed to load Language dll [1033\UILangRes.dll]’

And some components in windows aren’t working anymore.

Ehhh, you might need to do a Windows repair, as far as the Windows components not working (thats just a shot in the dark with very little to go on), but as far as Avast!, you might try a program repair. That done via Control Panel and just start as though you are going to uninstall Avast!, but choose the Repair option instead. Hard to say if it would work if Windows itself is damaged, but might be worth a shot.

Yeah, did that already and then it works, then I try to update avast again and the problems start all over again :stuck_out_tongue:
But gonna try the avast repair now.

After the repair, reboot immediately. Frequently, the display of Avast is not “perfect” after the repair (sync with Windows too), so the reboot clarifies the situation.

After that, simply follow the re-registration link to solve the problem.

Weird

Well, windows repair didn’t change anything about the problems.
The Avast repair is pretty impossible because when I try to change Avast in the control panel (or with revo uninstaller), nothing happens. I checked and doublechecked with procmon and my control panel, but not even a process starts up…
@Tech, strange, when I open that log, I can read everything? Maybe my log is saved with a different character set?

I suggest an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade your key from old versions.
  7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Okay, did a few things since yesterday:

  • Like Tech suggested, I completely re installed Avast with his guide. But after that my computer was a disaster ??? My network drivers disappeared, couldn’t connect to the internet anymore, ad-aware stopped working and some other programs also refused.
  • So… I got pretty irritated ( :stuck_out_tongue: ) and just took a cd-image with windows 7 on it and re-installed a fresh windows 7. First thing to do: installing Avast again and activate with my license file. Okay: everything alright. Second: deleting some junk that was delivered with my Asus laptop on the OEM-disk… Now, suddenly: red alert from avast saying there were problems updating again. ?! Well, I checked my license file and it’s gone again?

Now, I find this to be rather strange?

A little list with components I deleted:

  • Windows Live (Don’t need that stuff)
  • The games and game-park that was installed on my asus.
  • Of course before I installed Avast: Trend micro antivirus suite trial (or something like that)
  • Nuance PDF-reader

Now I’m really confused, I did a clean installation from windows 7, I formatted my Data partition, I only installed Avast and google chrome, but still I get the same problem why I started this thread. I really hope somebody has ever seen this before, because I’m getting pretty desperate… :stuck_out_tongue:

P.S.
I uploaded my fresh log to dropbox. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29409272/Setup.log (Hope it’s readable this time.)

Removal utilities for Tren Micro (#35a/b/c):

http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/.

You should read the relevant info first.

Even if that is not the exact conflict (remnants of TrendMicro), it seems from your description that the problem arises when you uninstall some of those tools you don’t like, rather than when you install Avast or insert the license.

An additional suggestion (that may or may not solve the problem, but it’s anyway useful): use Windows Update and validate your Windows before installing or uninstalling anything.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: Trend Micro causes avast to crash.
But the fact is, before I re-installed windows, Avast hadn’t a single problem with the old deleted antivirus.
And you’re right: it hasn’t anything to do with inserting the license, is’t more like: Avast want’s to check for an update, then the update can’t download and THEN I get the message with ‘couldn’t update’, trial period not activated etc.

Well, when I saw that problem again yesterday, I tried to activate the trial license, but I got a popup saying it wasn’t possible (dunno anymore what it said exactly), with my license file the same problem.

Tried the last thing too, but doesn’t help. Well, I’ll update you guys if I find the solution to my problem, it’s maybe useful for other people in the future… :stuck_out_tongue:

It sounds “like” the license files you are trying are not compatible with the Avast edition and version you have installed (independently of the downloading problem).

In addition, is your computer clock giving you the correct date/time?

For the license issue, you may want to try again the removal utility for Avast and then installing Avast Free with a clean new setup just downloaded (Avast Free latest stable version). Then please reboot before testing it.

The reason I suggest this is because the Free (NOT trial) edition for Avast would be enough to check any related problem and the download issue for Avast updates, and the firewall component is not there (so less components and interactions to test). Once this configuration works and all the issues are solved, then you could uninstall the Free edition and install yours with your original license.

Will try that, I got a license file for Avast internet security and that’s the one I installed.
Clock is giving right time (dunno if it’s completely correct, but I think so) Anyway, my clock is synchronized with time.windows.com. :stuck_out_tongue:

What do you mean with “I got” a license. Are you sure it is a valid legal one? That may be part of your license problem.

Clock is giving right time (dunno if it's completely correct, but I think so) Anyway, my clock is synchronized with time.windows.com. :P

The exact time is not so important in this context, but the date is important for your license.

I bought that license yeah, if that’s what you mean… And I’m 100% sure it’s a valig legal one. It worked for about 2 moths until I was cleaning up my computer and when I then tried to update my virus database, avast refused to do so and if I looked to my license file then, there was this problem (screenshot is here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29409272/Avast%20problem.png (same problem has returned))
As you can see, it’s not possible to activate the trial nor to insert my license again.

And my date is correct.
