AIS 5.0.677, unsecured, program won't start

Win 7 - IE7 - Toshiba ACPIx64 laptop, everything else in working order.
subscripton status is active.

I’m trying to get Avast internet security fired back up on hubby’s laptop - he’s not sure when it went down. So far I’ve tried a cold reboot - turning off the user control panel… rather turning it down to the bottom so it quits asking if I want to allow avast to make changes to the computer.
I did a search for this problem… found old posts (last April) suggesting repair from the control panel add/remove programs list. I was not given a repair option… only uninstall.

He’s not sure where he “safely” stored his license key so until he finds it, uninstall and reinstall are off the fix list.

Might anyone have any suggestions on other options for getting avast turned back on?

Did you scroll down ?
5.0.677
why not upgrade to latest 5.1.889

Updating the program won’t work when it’s not turned on :-
I did give that a shot too.

Yep… scrolled but I’ll go look again

ok… evidently I had not gone far enough in the process (my pc still uses XP) to find the scroll down screen - which I now have. I tried repair and got a message that avast did not uninstall properly. Interesting since I didn’t click uninstall.

I suggest an installation from scratch to upgrade our latest version:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

thanks for the instructions and the links
When hubby figures out where he put his registration key… we’ll get right on that.

register if you use free or insert key for pro/suite

yeah! It worked… we’re back up and running now. Thanks

welcome

Just so you know in the future for XP, the Avast Repair function, it is the very last option below the uninstall option when you scroll down under Add/Remove Programs.
