Alerts Page settings

I have just installed the 4.6 Home edition, and am using XP SP2 Professional.
Could someone please explain why, on the alerts page of the settings, if I edit the SMTP envelope by adding my server address for incoming email, and press the ‘test’ button, I get an ‘Unknown Error the alert cannot be sent’ message. The same happens when I press the’test all’ button. Is this perhaps because this page is only intended for internal networks, rather than LANs. I have a Broadband connection through a loval ISP.

Are you using the same smtp server of your ISP?
I mean, you connect the Internet through a server (terra.com; teleline.com; etc.). Is your email from this smpt? (user@terra.com; user@teleline.com)
If not, I think you should be able to authenticate your smtp… ::slight_smile:

Could someone please explain why, on the alerts page of the settings, if I edit the SMTP envelope by adding my server address for incoming (not sending) email, and press the 'test' button, I get an 'Unknown Error the alert cannot be sent' message.

I think you have inadvertently answered your own question, I have taken the liberty of editing in Bold Text what may be the problem.

You need to enter the smtp server address (outgoing/send) not the pop3 server address (incoming/receive), you can’t send email using the pop3 protocol server. The two server addresses are usually different (pop3.serverdomain.net or smtp.serverdomain.net) check your email programs account details for the correct SMTP server address.

J have already checked, and the correct SMTP address is what I have input. The error message is shown for all entries on the allert page. Perhaps this is a program or setup ?error

What exactly are you enetering?

 • the EMAIL ADDRESS of the recipient (i.e. probably YOUR email address) should be used for the entry on the Alerts page
 • correct SMTP SERVER details need to be filled on the SMTP page.

Is this the case?

Thanks
Vlk

I have input my correct email address and on the SMTP Page, the only information is the mail-out address and the port number which is 25. there is no other information to input, so the answer is yes.

To Vlk.
Having uninstalled, because repair didn’tseem to do the trick, on the alerts page, for SMTP, instead of clicking on 'edit’I clicked on ‘add’ and input my email address, and that seems to have worked. So all seems to be well! perhaps the Alerts page could have been differently worded to make that clear.

Following Vlk’s information, alerts works perfectly:
Virus Warning: This is a test message from avast! anti-virus.

It would be nice to have clear instructions on this fairly simple task. I’ll do the best I can to explain the process.

First, right click on the Avast icon (the blue ball with an “a” on it) and select Program Settings. Next, highlight SMTP on the left side of the window to expose the SMTP options. (You can get the information needed here from your email accounts settings.) The Server address should be something similar to “mail.ispcompany.com”. The Port is usually 25. The From Address will be your email address, something like “emailname@ispcompany.com”. If your mail server requires authentication, enter the user name and password you use to connect (authenticate to be allowed to use there service). You now have an account set up to be used to send email alerts.
Now, in the left hand side of the window, highlight the “Alerts” icon. On the right side of the window click “Add” and select “SMTP”. In the “Type net alert address…" type your email account (name@ispcompany.net). Click “OK” and then click “Test”. If you see “The alert was successfully sent” message, you are good to go.

I really hope this helps someone.

The Server address should be something similar to “mail.ispcompany.com”.
Besides being similar it is important that this server address is the SMTP server address and not the POP3 server address as most ISPs have different servers for SMTP and POP3.

Check your email client server details for the SMTP server address, this is the one that should go into SMTP server address box.

Another point is that this topic although titled ‘Alerts Page settings,’ it is dealing with the Program Settings, Alerts and Program Settings, SMTP settings two separate functions.
