Hello, I have compabillity-issues with ZA which causes the internet to slow down, so I turned it off. Do anyone know of any free firewalls that is non-resident and easy to use for me and my PC? I also would like to know how I turn off avast! cause I want it off when I play onlinegames.
When I rightclick the avast!-icon in my right bar there is no longer any option to turn it off. Are there also any tweaks I can do to make it become more non-resident? Using avast! free version 7.0.1426.
Any of these work well with avast. As mentioned before all firewalls are “resident”. I’m will not get into which is best as that is to be decided by the user. I prefer Online Armor Free as it’s set it and forget it. Whichever one you decide on I recommend making mutual exclusions in both avast and your firewall.
Outpost, Online Armor, Comodo (D+), and Private Firewall all have HIPS components. I know for certain that Outpost has webcontrol and antimalware that will need to be disabled.
Are you looking for a basic firewall or a firewall with HIPS?
I tried Private Firewall which gave me a really hard time installing. Finally figured out having WinPatrol running was the problem. It locked my computer up and slowed boot time down quite a bit when it would work. Had to go back to last known good configuration several times then just re-imaged and scrapped the installer. Didn’t play well on my computer.
My personal favorite is Outpost. If you like reading log files, Outpost will give you plenty of reading material.
PC Tools offers no free products anymore except Threatfire which they don’t seem to be supporting. No surprise there. You knew that was coming after Symantec bought them.
Private Friewall is not for newbees.
Actually the WIN 7 firewall w/o outbound protection enabled is perfectly fine; more so if you are behind a router with a hardware firewall. You will also have zero conflicts with installing anything. As long as you have a good anti-virus with spyware protection, outbound protection is just a pain.
A secure DNS provider is one of the easiest ways to block malware; OpenDNS, NortonDNS, etc.
I would also recommended MBAM Pro version that has a one-time modest cost.
If you also do alot of online financial stuff, I would also recommend Zemana’s Anti-keylogger. If you shop around, you can find a one year license for $17; that’s what I paid which is less that half their $40 a year normal fee.

Release date is 5/2011. That is the old firewall and not updateable I assume. All you need is a major OS WIN update and your firewall might very well go caput.

I had a number of issues with the version prior to the current release.
First it would not run with Avast ver 6 on my PC. Next, using a different compatible AV and with training mode turned on, it totally trashed my dual boot configuration. I had to create a DHCP rule to allow my router and stop continuous alerts from it. Then I had to “tweak” application rules for my AV and manually set any Internet facing apps like IE to “untrusted.” Finally, I had to change a few firewall rules since the default config was insecure. I can go on but I think you get the picture. Once properly configured, PF did an excellent job.
