An error 82 (00000052) has occured

Avast Free Antivirus / Premium Security

I had an antivirus Norton 2006. I removed it with the tools provided by Symantec. While trying to install AVAST 4, an error occurs and it is as follows:

" Setup Self Extract
An error 82 (00000052) has occured. Last performed operation was extracting main exe"

Which can be the reason for it?

What is your OS ?
are or have you used Any other security program ??
Did you try re-installing Avast ?
Did you try uninstalling then re-installing ?

Try to download avast setup.exe file again… something seems corrupted in the one you’ve downloaded…

Im a happy ex Norton antivirus user, Avast is my AV home now.

The windows error 82 = The directory or file cannot be created.

Are you trying to install avast to a different location than the default “C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4” ?
Are you installing from ‘the administrator’ or a User account with administrator rights ?

My OS is WindowsXP pro.
I have no other security program.
I’m re-installing Avast 3 times but the same error occurs.
I’ve tried to download avast setup.exe file from several sources, but always same error.
This error occurs at the beginning before i can give the location to install it. I have administrator right…

Have of other councils has itself to give me ?

No… You must use just the official websites. There are rogue downloads of avast over the Internet.

Save the file you your disk and does not only ‘run’ it, save and then run the saved file.

Are you using a download manager if so you could try without ?

That is what i’ve done, used the official websites, then saved the file to my disk and then runned the saved file.
This error allways occurs :-[

Please, post the last 100 files of avast log files:

What is the filename of the executable you downloaded, and what exactly is the size?

Igor, why don’t you just start a new age in your website and add the MD5 info for each .exe and skin that could be downloaded?
It won’t be that difficult 8)

The filename is “setupfre.exe” and its size is 13 446 648 octets.
I have no avast log file because i can’t install avast (the error occurs when I before i can give the location to install it)

Try to install into the default folder and not a folder with accented characters, non-latim characters, etc.
Just a suggestion 8)

The size is OK… a few more questions:

  1. Do you have some free space on your disk? Is your TEMP folder set correctly? (i.e. does it point to an existing folder?)
  2. Would you be able to generate some hash of the installer file? (CRC32, MD5, SHA… whatever)
