An error has occured while attempting to update

I started getting this error message:

An error has occurred while attempting to update

  • in a red pop up window a couple of days after what I thought was a successful installation of Avast. Seems like there is a problem with Avast getting virus updates though I’m sure it has worked at least once, maybe a couple of times following the initial installation.

I tried to update manually by downloading and executing vpsupd.exe but got the following error message:

Can’t install vpsupdate. Please report the following error codes:
Ver: 4.6.665
SI: 0x00000005
ST: 0xFFFFFFFF
LE: 0x00000000

Having read some of the forum postings I thought I try uninstalling Avast and starting again. I tried to uninstal Avast using the Add/Remove programs which failed.

I’m just about to download the Avast removal tool but before I do I just wonder if anyone has any advice about what is the best thing to do next?

I have a 1Gb PIII Dell PC running Windows ME, I have a broadband Internet connection via a cable modem. I don’t have a personal Firewall and have previously uninstalled and thrown away Norton Internet Security!

Have you tried the repair option in Add/Remove programs instead of “remove” ?

Strange, but you could use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation and boot.

I bet on a NIS bad uninstall… or the poor response of Windows Me.

After uninstalling and booting, maybe you can install again and see what you get…

Thanks for the reply. I did find a stray bit of NIS (LiveUpdate)still installed when I looked in Add/Remove programs - which I uninstalled. I used the Avast removal utility to uninstall Avast which seemed to work fine.

I downloaded the setup file again and tried a new install - I now get an error message:

Avast has caused an error in Kernel32.dll.
Avast will now close

I uninstalled the partial install using the removal utility again. I then tried running setup again but in safe mode having emptied the Windows Temp folder. I get the same error message.

Any suggestions? I’ve researched Kernel32.dll errors using Google and get a lot of sites selling software for registry fixes - is this the way to go next?

A pop-up window with a red background means that an error occured. Usually, because of being unable to access the update server.
