"an error has occured while attempting to update!"

hello everyone,

don’t know if this has alredy been answered somewhere, but could not make anything out of those!

to cut it short…it had all been going smooth since i switched to avast 5 months ago and updates would come automatically in a blue pop-up box…but all of a sudden, since past 2 days,a red error box

“an error has occured while attempting to update!

has been popping up instead…

i am using ZA,no problems with that…

do i need to uninstall and re-install???

please advise.

just as a test go into ZA program access and remove the permission for avast setup , then try to update avast and you should get a popup asking for permission . once you grant it permission that should be problem solved.
please reply if this fails and make a note of which step falls over.

Could it be expired or something? ???

thank you Cloussau,

i did opened ZA,blocked avast,and then tried updating it…

i am sorry, but whenever i try to update either by right clicking avast globe in sys tray or by firing the program from start menu
(then clicking on update iAVS),things are just freezing up without any response from avast.

may be i will wait till next system boot-up time and then i will log on to net to see what message avast or ZA displays…

i will give the feedback…

thanx once again!

OK,this is what has recently happened…

the red error msg box did pop up with same warning about not being able to update.

now, when i click this box,an avast msg box titled “avast antivirus setup” opens,in this msg box it is said:downloading packages
downloading file:servers.def.vpu

after some time, message is displayed:the system cannot find the file specified.

when i click OK for this message,a new box pops up:downloading file:servers.def.vpu.stamp.

and again after this a new box:downloading file:servers.def.vpu

final message:cannot connect to server

and now,the whole process repeats itself automatically, viz.,

downloading file:servers.def.vpu

when i try to cancel this whole thing,it says something to effect:update not yet finished, cancelling may result in avast getting corrupted, are you sure to cancel?

:: :: :: ::

and so it goes on…

as funny as it all looks, this is what i am facing.

please tell me if i have already screwed up avast and a fresh download and install may be the quickest solution…

???

I also got the red error pop-up this morning when avast tried to update. BUT when I tried updating manually, it worked fine.

We’ll see how it goes on the next update.

avast! 4.2.7.3; Win98 SE

avast! 4.2.7.3; Win98 SE
Are you really sure that isn't a typo version 4.2, we are on 4.7.826 currently ?

Will this help?

Oops! Sorry. That was the version of my skin. I’m on 4.7.817. I’m going to hold off on the 826 for awhile though

This latest version David mentioned above has enhancements that correct problems some people have been having. It might also help you.

The last version is 4.7.827, are you referring to this one?
If not, can you update or check this page: http://www.avast.com/eng/4-7-826-problems.html

No, I did mean version 4.7.817. There was so much trouble with the 826 earlier that I think I’ll wait awhile till 827 is proven to be okay. I will update in a couple of days I think.

Thanx.

:: edit ::
I updated this afternoon (4/29) to 827 without any problems.

Win98 SE; IE-5.5 SP-2; ZAP

after having read other forumers’ comments,i have concluded that the possible solution is to uninstall and install the latest version…

in this regard, can any one tell me how to go about complete uninstall of avast so that a fresh install works smoothly…

at present,i have avast 4.6 (feb 2006 build)
and use ZA.

First, download the lastest update of avast but do not install it.
Second, download the uninstaller aswClear.exe on the avast webpage located at the link below.

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html

Third, disconnect from the internet.
Fourth, uninstall avast using Add/Remove programs.
Fifth, use the uninstaller and make sure you follow the directions provided on the webpage.

Next, install the new version of avast and restart your computer afterwards. Adjust any settings you may need to depending on programs you might use.
It should now be safe to re-connect to the internet.

thanx a lot,but what’s unstall, do you mean install here ???

and by “latest update”,you mean the latest version of avast right ? ( :-X)

Yes, I did mean install. I have corrected the error.

Yes, latest update means the latest version of avast.
