an expectation

we all know,Kaspersky update their virus database every 3 or 4 hours, while it cost nearly one day for my beloved avast to update virus database. and it is sometimes very important for PC's safety to update timely,so i expect avast can update more frequent.
of course ,this is only a little suggestion, i am very appreciated that avast as a free antivirus software provides us with such comprehensive protection. :)

Well… updating is not as good as we want ever.
Once a day isn’t enough sometimes. But I would want to know how Kaspersky releases its virus databases, one by one, very few… and, maybe, avast let the list grow up a little more to avoid server flood during tons of updates?
Where is the limitation? On Internet traffic, on isolating and finishing the vps files to release, … Just curious.

Firstly your statement is incorrect, avast has no artificial update schedule and they are release as they are compiled and ready. It just so happens that currently there seems to be 1 per day, however, there have been times when there have been 4 or more updates in a day.

For instance there were three on the 20/8/2007 and if you review the VPS history you will see many days were multiple VPS updates occur. avast! checks for updates when you first connect to the internet and every 4 hours (configurable) after that if you remain connected. So if there is an update available you will get it at the earliest opportunity.

avast! VPS Updates History

David, I don’t think Kaspersky has placebo updates either.
Sometimes we could be not that critic as we should against updates/speed/submition/etc. issues, don’t you think?
But, ok, sometimes we have more than one update a day.

I and I’m sure you can remember three or more years ago when the average was 3-4 updates per week, but even then there were occasions during periods of heavy activity that 3-4 were issued in a day. Since then there has been a continued improvement in the updates.

I can’t speak for kaspersky and I didn’t mention anything about their updates, placebo or otherwise, I only corrected what I felt was an incorrect assumption about avast only updating once a day, that if it were correct would be an artificial update schedule (nothing about Kaspersky’s update schedule).

According to my logs, on August 23rd and 24th-2007 , there were two avast! updates on each day.

It is now a common occurrence to have more than one VPS update in a day.
