Android phone cannot connect to unsecured wireless

Firstly, I’ll apologise if I’m asking a question that has been answered elsewhere on the forum (I have searched for it). I’m new to Android and have a new SE Xperia Neo. I’m running Gingerbread 2.3.4 build 4.0.2.A.0.62 - phone not rooted or customised in any way.

My issue: I can access secured wireless networks fine once I have the key. Any time I try to get on an unsecured wireless network, I get the “obtaining IP address” message and then my wireless shows “connected” but I can’t access any internet sites or resources.

I have Avast mobile (free version) installed and haven’t configured it heavily - and I installed it from day one so I’ve never tried to connect to an unsecured wireless network without Avast. I’m very reluctant to uninstall it, but could there be a setting in Avast which is preventing these unsecured connections?

A major reason for having a smartphone was to have the ability to connect while out and about so this is a pain >:( and any help would really be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

since your device is not rooted, it’s very unlikely AMS has anything to do with the problems you are facing. Even though it says “connected” to an unsecured wifi, that doesn’t really mean that Internet connectivity is available, it just means that your device connected to the WiFi AP, not to the Internet. Do you have any friends with you (for example) that can verify that Internet is working for them on the same network? (It would be best if it was the first time on the network for them as well.)

Filip - thanks for the guidance. I’ll try this as soon as I can and update the thread.
