Annoying Display Problem

I don’t understand why I can’t get a simple answer from Alwil:
“We’re working on it.”
“We don’t know what’s causing it.”
“It’s not an avast! problem”
ANY ANSWER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Well, it’s really strange. I was thinking about it for some time, but I don’t see any difference between the About dialog and any other avast! dialogs. Additionally, I don’t see any difference between the first opening and the subsequent ones.
So, I have really no idea what might be causing this.

Try to delete the value AboutRect from
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ALWIL Software\Avast\4.0

Thanks for the comeback igor
Unfortunately the reg. change didn’t help. still have the same thing the first time I start the about option.
So for right now I just close it and re-open it. The second time it’s fine.???

Sorry if this was already suggested or tried. Change your video drivers to the standard vga drivers and restart. This type of issue is almost always a problem with the display driver. Also, update your video drivers. First from the Microsoft update site and if that doesn’t work try the manufacturers site.

Thanks MrRAlan ,
But my video drivers are fully up to date using the manufacturers latest drivers.
Keep in mind that this problem only effects on small part of one program. There aren’t any
other display problems.

Bob, did you try just the microsoft generic vga drivers…just to isolate the issue? Also, is your dpi setting set to normalsize, 96 DPI?

MrRAlan
It’s not the video driver and my display dpi setting is set to normalsize, 96 DPI.

Igor, is that a solution for this one?
I was browsing the forum looking for unsolved questions and remember this one… well…
Maybe Bob deserves some research and help from us, the old guys here

What do you think? Only reinstalling…? But I think he already installed avast more than one?
What’s up? ::slight_smile:

Don’t be o sure about video drivers. In the time of S3 Trio 64v+ cards, you could see a lot of abnormal things going on on screen just because of the drivers. Please, install XP generic drivers or downgrade your drivers and try again.

As stated before, it’s not the video driver.

Putting a check mark in the on-demand popup “don’t show this window again” has always resulted in a script error supposedly in internet explorer (not running at the time), this problem has been occurring for the last several versions of Avast!. Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 5.5. Hot fix didn’t help. :frowning: ???

That’s a problem in one of IE updates - see here.
Some users noticed, however, that the update cannot be installed on SP2 - requiring SP2 to be uninstalled first, and reinstalled after the patch application :frowning:

Don’t know, really. That’s a mystery :frowning:

EdB, the Simple User Interface window is a CHM file - so called HtmlHelp. This stuff is rendered by the Internet Explorer component of Windows, so it’s correct.
This problem (with the “Don’t show again” checkbox) is related to one of MS Updates (of the HtmlHelp component) that somehow broke its functionality.
The linked hotfix always helped in the past (for people having the same problem)… so I really think it should work for you, too. :-
Did you restart the computer after applying the hotfix? Did the hotfix installation finished successfully, actually?

What does this problem have to do with the problem for which this thread was started???
It’s always best to start your own thread unless you have the exact same problem.
Otherwise all you do is cause confusion and hijack the original thread.

Wrong, try reading the entire thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=862

Annoying Display Problem!!!

Edb, please, if you start a new thread, I’ll be pleased to help you.

Bob, I was checking into the translated packages of avast if I can identify ‘where’ is the about dialog. Of course, I’ve failed.
I suppose you have already uninstalled/installed again… I suppose other ‘About’ dialogs (of other programs) work…

Igor, if we just change (replace) a file of Bob’s installation, won’t it correct the problem?

Repaired, uninstalled re-installed, complete uninstall and re-install with a reboot
in between each operation.
